Nazareth Runs by Birmingham-Southern in Texas
IRVING, Texas -- Nazareth scored seven of the first eight goals of the game Tuesday and went on to easily defeat Birmingham-Southern in a non-conference women's lacrosse game, 20-6, at the University of Dallas.
Sophomores Alyssa Johnston (Canandaigua, NY) and Erinn Wood (Vestal, NY) each scored four goals and added three assists as Nazareth improved to 3-1. Birmingham-Southern, in its third season of intercollegiate play, dropped to 2-2.
Wood scored for Nazareth just :52 into the game, but the Panthers tied the score less than a minute later on a free-position goal by Ashley Johnson. Nazareth then rattled off the next six goals to take control with Wood completing the run with a pair of unassisted scores to give the Golden Flyers a 7-1 lead.
After two goals by the Panthers' Chelsea Van Voorhis, Nazareth continued to extend its lead until the score reached 14-4 before halftime. Johnston had three of her goals in the first half while sophomore Megan Cregan (Brighton) and senior Michelle Cook (Waterloo) each scored twice. Freshman Kelsey McNaboe (Corcoran HS/Syracuse, NY) also netted her first career goal.
Nazareth also scored the first four goals of the season half, including two by freshman Amy McIntosh (Horseheads, NY). Johnston also contributed a pair of assists and sophomore Leah Cronister (Brighton) completed the onslaught with her first career goal with 6:00 left.
Freshman Tara Prosak (4 saves) played the first half in goal and sophomore Shelby Robinson (6 saves) played the second half.
Nazareth plays again Thursday against Sewanee, Tenn. at 11:00 a.m.
