Oswego Lets Lead Slip But Dominates in OT vs. Kean

ORLANDO - Oswego State gave up a five-goal lead in the second half but dominated overtime to post a 16-11 win over Kean University in Orlando at Disney's ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Tuesday.

Rachael Raffa led the Laker attack with seven points on five goals and two assists followed by four goals and an assist from Erin Cummings with two of the scores coming in overtime. It was the opening game of the season for Oswego State, while Kean fell to 0-4.

The Lakers grabbed an early 3-0 with goals from Raffa and Cummings in the first 1:04 before Kean answered with three scores of its own. Oswego State looked to be headed into halftime with a three-goal advantage following markers from Megan McNulty, Cummings, and Raffa, but Amanda South tallied the first of her six goals to pull the Cougars to within 6-4 at the break.

Senior Bri Borrow scored twice along with another goal from Raffa early in the second to give the Lakers their largest lead of the game at 9-4. However, Kean answered by rattling off seven of the next nine goals to send the contest into overtime.

Oswego State showed its mental toughness by controlling play on both ends of the field in the extra frame, as the Lakers won six of the seven draw controls in the period and did not allow a single Cougar shot on goal. During overtime, head coach Brandi Ostrander received goals from Kristen Darcy, Cummings, Borrow, and Raffa to come away with the win.

Oswego State goalie Ashlee Engel turned in a solid game with ten saves, while holding Kean to three free-position goals in eight opportunities. The Lakers went 2 for 3 on free-position shots and for the opposition to commit 17 turnovers. Jules Keeley and Ashlie Berghold combined to make 16 saves for the Cougars.

Oswego State returns to action Tuesday, March 29 when it opens the home part of the schedule with a 4:00 p.m. tilt against Clarkson.
