Lakers Take Down Edinboro for Fourth Straight Win

ERIE, Pa. - The seventh-ranked Mercyhurst College women's lacrosse team won its fourth straight game by defeating Edinboro, 11-7, Tuesday afternoon in its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest of the season at Tullio Field.

The Lakers (4-1, 1-0 PSAC), playing as the designated visiting team after the game was moved to Mercyhurst due to poor field conditions at Edinboro, turned aside a pesky Fighting Scots squad in the second half after ending the first with a slim 4-3 advantage.

Senior Kimberly Masterton, who led all goal scorers in the game with a hat trick, started a three-goal run to open the second stanza when she connected on a free-position shot at the 28:01 mark. Freshman Anna LeGrett followed suit at 18:15, while junior Kelly Palmer made it a 7-3 game at 14:15.

Edinboro responded shortly after by outscoring the Lakers 3-1 to pull within two with under nine minutes to play.

However, after a four-minute stretch that saw both teams go scoreless, the Lakers ignited the offense with another three-goal spurt keyed by two goals from LeGrett sandwiched around a Masterton score leading into the final minute of play.

Edinboro closed out the game with its seventh goal at the 41-second mark.

Mercyhurst never trailed in the game, including in the first half when both squads combined for seven goals. The Laker defense held Edinboro to just three goals in the frame, with the first coming near the 11-minute mark. That score cut the Laker lead in half, at 2-1, before both teams exchanged scores up until the final minute.

For the game, junior Ally Keirn posted a game-high five points made up of two goals and three assists. Masterton and LeGrett both had three scores apiece, and Palmer netted two along with a helper. Senior Elizabeth Tice rounded out the offense with a single tally.

Sophomore Jenny Perkins made 10 saves to move to 4-1 on the season. Mercyhurst outshot Edinboro 29-25 and picked up three more ground balls than its opponent, 16-13.

The Lakers return to action this Thursday, Mar. 17, when they host PSAC foe Slippery Rock for a 4:00 p.m. contest at Tullio Field.
