Hilbert Edges Cobleskill in Next Day Rematch

Myrtle Beach, SC In reverse fashion from the day before, Hilbert College took a 11-10 victory from Cobleskill March 16th in a back-and-forth scoring affair. Ryan Wagner (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) scored only one goal for the day, but his hit at 3:30 left in the fourth quarter broke a 10-10 tie and sealed the victory for the Hawks (3-1).

The leading scorer for Hilbert was Josh Baker (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) with six goals (1 assist) but it was a total team effort with runs by each team making it an interesting game to the final horn.

Hilbert took at 6-1 lead in the first quarter and survived the Cobleskill offensive pressure in the second session going into half time up 7-6. The Hawks built another 9-6 lead before the Tigers clawed back and tied the score at 10-10 in the fourth. Wagner's winning goal was scored in a man-up situation finishing the team's southern swing with a win.

Nick Kieffer (Lee Center, NY/Rome Free Academy) and Wagner were a combined 9 for 18 in face-offs and Baker had 6 ground balls for the game. Defensively, Sean Manning (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) held Cobleskill's best player to just one goal, while Kyle MacKowiak (Buffalo, NY/Bishop Timon-St. Jude) had 14 take-aways. Pat Lunderman (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) had another solid game in the cage stopping 16 shots. Sean Purtill (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and Greg Zitnik (Blasdell, NY/Frontier) each netted two goals in the winning effort.

Hilbert returns to Hamburg over the weekend and has a few days to prepare for their March 23rd game at Thiel College. Their home opener is set for March 26 against La Roche College with a 2:00 pm start.
