Swarthmore Holds off Wooster for First Victory

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Freshman Jonathan Molloy netted four goals to lead Swarthmore (1-4) to a hard fought 9-5 win over the visiting Wooster Fightin' Scots (1-2) Wednesday evening on Clothier Field.

The win marks the Garnet's first of the season.

Swarthmore came out with guns blazing in the first period, scoring two goals in the first 30 seconds of play.

Freshman Geli Carabases struck first after Swat won the opening faceoff, taking the ball down the field blasting a shot past the Scots' keeper.

Only seven seconds later the score would show 2-0 Swarthmore after senior Mark Czernyk won the faceoff again and set up a shot for Molloy that would find the back of the net.

Molloy found the net three more times before the half, including an unassisted goal with 14 seconds to play in the first period. Molloy led the team with four goals and an assist while causing two turnovers.

Swarthmore went up big in the first half scoring six straight goals.

After going down 6-0, Wooster built some momentum in the closing seconds of the first half when Matt Pullara launched a shot past the Garnet netminder with only three seconds on the clock.

That momentum carried over into the second half as the Scots tacked on two more to open the third period before junior Max Hubbard re-lit the spark in the Swarthmore offensive with an unnassisted goal.

Freshman attacker Daniel Kowalyshyn followed his lead only eight seconds later with another Garnet goal set up by Molloy.

Wooster threatened again late in the game with quick back-to-back goals of its own but once again Hubbard answered with a man-up goal, sealing the Swat victory. Hubbard finished with three goals in the game.

Along with his game-opening goal, Carabases led Swarthmore with four caused turnovers.

Czernick won 13 of 17 faceoffs and picked up seven groundballs in the game.

Swarthmore opens up Centennial Conference play on Saturday March 19 when it hosts the Ursinus Bears. Play is slated to begin at 3:00 PM.
