Wheelock Falls to Rivier in First-Ever Wildcat Game

BOSTON, MA - Junior Kylie Hefford (Exeter, NH/St. Thomas Aquinas) scored twice, including netting the first goal in Wheelock College women's lacrosse history, as the Wildcats took the field for the first time on Wednesday evening with a 20-4 loss against Rivier College at Winsor Field. The second-year Raiders also kicked off the 2011 campaign.

In addition to Hefford's pair of markers, junior Karlye Kennedy (Byfield, MA/Triton Regional) and sophomore Cara McAuliffe (Nashua, NH/Nashua South) tallied once apiece. Freshman Michelle Greene (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield) drew the team's first start between the pipes, making four saves in a little more than 40 minutes, while sophomore Alexandra Perry (Malden, MA/Malden) came on in relief during portions of both periods.

Rivier sophomore Lauren Brett (Otisfield, ME/Oxford Hills Comprehensive) led all scorers with seven goals and an assist, while senior Natalie Bonvie (Salem, NH/Salem) netted four markers. Three Raiders tallied twice, including freshman Hannah Wyatt (Merrimack, NH/Merrimack), who added an assist in her college debut. Sophomore Caleigh Bertolaccini (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) made nine saves during a complete-game effort in net.

The visitors scored seven times in the opening 12:51, with Bonvie and Wyatt netting two goals apiece, before Hefford provided the first goal in Wheelock history with 16:46 remaining in the first half. McAuliffe tallied off a free-position shot 2:02 later to bring her team within 7-2 before Rivier scored eight straight times to pull away. Hefford and Kennedy both found the back of the net in the second stanza, when the Wildcats outshot the Raiders, 11-10, but Bertolaccini turned aside six of those tries.

Wheelock continues a two-game home stand by facing Thomas College of Maine on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
