Bombard's Last-Second Goal Lifts Lyons Over Big Blue

WESTMINSTER, Md. -- Junior midfielder Hilary Bombard (Northampton, Mass.) converted a free-position shot with three seconds left in regulation to give Mount Holyoke College an 11-10 non-conference victory over the University of New England in women's lacrosse action Wednesday evening at Scott S. Bair Stadium on the campus of McDaniel College.

Bombard was awarded the attempt just 30 seconds after a UNE free-position shot was turned aside on the other end of the field by Lyons sophomore goalie Jamie Theophilos (Hinsdale, Ill.).

As halftime neared, Mt. Holyoke scored its eighth consecutive goal to go up, 8-2. With a score by Big Blue senior Danielle Cate (Boscawen, N.H.) at the 2:29 mark, the Nor'easters began to show signs of a comeback.

The Lyons managed to push the margin back to six (9-3) with the initial goal of the second half, before four unanswered markers by UNE pulled the Nor'easters back to into a 9-7 contest with 18:53 to go. Cate found the back of the cage for the first and last goals of the spurt.

After MHC put its 10th goal on the board 29 seconds later, unassisted scores from sophomore Cara Cole (Norwood, Mass.), Cate, and first-year Sadie MacLean (Henniker, N.H.) down the stretch brought UNE back even. MacLean's equalizer went in with three minutes on the clock.

First-year Liz Randolph (Southbury, Conn.) tallied four first-half goals and added two assists to pace the Lyons (3-2). Bombard finished with three scores to go with two assists. Theophilos recorded 12 saves for Mt. Holyoke, which won for the third straight outing.

Cate led the Nor'easters (1-3) with four markers. Cole and MacLean each contributed two goals and one assist. In goal, first-year Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine) posted six stops.

Mt. Holyoke is off until next Thursday (Mar. 24), when it has its home-opener against Bridgewater State University.

UNE returns to Maine for a conference tilt against Roger Williams University on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) at the Big Blue Turf.
