Drew Falls to Oneonta for First Loss of Season

MADISON, N.J. (March 16, 2011) - Drew dropped their first game of the year to SUNY-Oneonta, 11-9 this evening in Ranger Stadium. The Red Dragons scored four unanswered goals in the second period to help capture their first win of the 2011 season.

Oneonta (1-3) responded to early Rangers goals scored by Craig Wagenblast (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) and Sean McGowan (Milltown, N.J./Saint Joseph's) to knot the score at two with a little over seven minutes to play in the first quarter. Mike Salerno would score the final goal of the period and the first of three goals on the night with 46 ticks left to put the Red Dragons up 4-2.

Drew (2-1) would get its only goal for the remainder of the half from McGowan, who scored his team-leading seventh goal of the year with 2:13 into the second quarter. The Red Dragons would then score the game's next five goals to open up a 9-3 lead with 13:01 left in the third. Oneonta's Mike Salerno and Jim van de Veerdo each registered a hat trick in the season's first victory.

The Rangers would stage a final comeback late in the third period and early fourth by scoring four-straight goals. Freshman Mark Barus (Jacobstown, N.J./Notre Dame) would get the Ranger offense going after he came from behind the net wrapped a low shot past the Red Dragon keeper. Eight seconds later classmate Andrew Somps (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) was fed by McGowan for the first of his two goals on the evening.

Somps would get his second goal of the night in a man up situation to pull the Rangers within two goals with 10:06 remaining in the game. Salerno would end the Ranger streak a little less than four minutes later to complete his hat trick and put the Red Dragons up three goals.

The Rangers were able to out-shoot the Red Dragons 45-41 and both McGowan and Joe Nacarlo split faceoffs, winning 12 a piece.

The Rangers will welcome in Hamilton College on Saturday afternoon for a non-conference tilt set to begin at 2:30. Drew looks to avenge a 7-6 loss from a season ago.
