Romano and Payne Score 9, But Warriors Fall to Eagles

ELMIRA, N.Y. Sophomore Stephen Romano (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) and junior Ethan Payne (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) combined for nine goals, but Lycoming succumbed to a second-half surge from Elmira, falling 15-11 in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon, March 17, at the Elmira Free Academy.

The Warriors (1-4 overall) built an 8-3 lead in the first half, jumping out with five goals in the first quarter, as Romano notched a hat trick in a span of 1:08 to give the team a 4-2 lead. For good measure, he assisted on a goal by senior Ryan O'Connor (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) with 30 seconds left in the first.

Each team traded goals early in the second quarter before Payne and Romano connected in the final 1:30 of the half to give the Warriors a five-goal lead.

A pair of man-up goals by the Eagles (2-0 overall) early in the second half cut the lead to three points, but Romano and Payne answered with tallies of their own to take a 10-5 lead. Late in the third quarter, though, the Eagles got rolling, as David Evert and Adam Walker rolled off six goals in a span of five minutes to take an 11-10 lead.

A goal from Payne with 4:25 left in the fourth quarter ended the Eagles run and cut the deficit to three goals, but the Warriors couldn't get any closer.

Freshman Jason Breau (Lima, N.Y./Honeyoye Falls-Lima) and O'Connor each added a goal and an assist, while junior Victor Marchetti (Cortland, N.Y./Homer) led the team defensively with two groundballs and three caused turnovers.

Walker and Evert led the Eagles with four goals a piece and Dustin Gatt added three goals. T.J. White led the team with seven groundballs and Gatt posted five. Paul Schwartz led the team with four caused turnovers.

In goal, Dave Bucchino made 18 saves to earn the win for the Eagles and senior Alan Antinarelli (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) posted 14 stops for the Warriors.

The Warriors open their Middle Atlantic Conference season next week, beginning with a road game at DeSales on Wednesday, March 23, at 4:00 p.m.
