Van Der Kar Nets 7 as Castleton Outguns Colby-Sawyer

CASTLETON, Vt. - Marie Van Der Kar (Manchester, Vt.) scored seven goals and dished out a pair of assists to lead Castleton State College to a 19-10 win over Colby-Sawyer College in women's lacrosse action Thursday evening at Spartan Stadium.

With the win, Castleton evens its record at 1-1, while Colby-Sawyer now stands at 1-3.

Freshman Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) scored four goals to follow Van Der Kar in the Spartan scoring column, while Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, N.Y.) added three. Liz Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y.) and Katelyn Nardini (Scotia, N.Y.) each chipped in a pair of goals, and JenniLee Mark (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored once to round out the scoring.

Laurel Bauer (Bradford, N.H.) led the Chargers with two goals and two assists, while Brittney Murphy (Woburn, Mass.) and Samantha Draper (Duxbury, Mass.) each scored twice. Molly Prudden (Andover, Mass.), Lyndsay French (Ipswich, Mass.), Hannah Cullen (Penacook, N.H.), and Kate Rial (Chester Springs, Pa.) each had one goal apiece.

Colby-Sawyer led 6-4 with 12:20 remaining in the first half on Murphys 13th goal of the season, an unassisted marker that came on a nifty one-on-one move from the left flank. Castleton then reeled off seven unanswered goals, spanning the next 18 minutes of play to take control of the contest. Mark started the scoring barrage with just over 10 minutes left in the first half, and Mazzola added all three of her tallies during the surge.

Van Der Kar, who is Castletons all-time leading scorer at 199 career goals, also added a game-high eight ground balls and six caused turnovers to key the Spartan transition game that finished 15 for 22 on clear attempts.

Murphy led the Chargers with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Lily Derbyshire (Little Compton, R.I.) made eight saves and allowed six goals in the first half to earn the win, giving way to Becki Duszak (Erieville, N.Y.) who stopped three second-half shots, allowing four goals.

Liz Malenfant (Siasconset, Mass.) stopped 12 shots in the loss, allowing 15 goals in 51 minutes and 46 seconds, while Ekta Sampson (Hyde Park, Vt.) allowed four goals, and had three saves in eight-plus minutes.

Castleton returns to action Tuesday, March 22 at 6:00 pm when the Spartans travel to Skidmore. Colby-Sawyer opens The Commonwealth Coast Conference schedule Saturday at Nichols, first draw scheduled for 1:00 pm.
