Dewan Propels Redlands to Victory over WNEC

On the heels of sophomore attack player Aimee Dewan's (Alamo, CA) six-goal, second-half explosion, University of Redlands overcame a 3-8 deficit to nab a 13-10 victory against the visiting Golden Bears of Western New England College (MA).

Amidst their 10 goals in the second half, the Bulldogs erupted for five unanswered netters to eventually take a lead that held up through the final whistle.

Redlands recorded the first goal of the game less than four minutes into the opening half when senior midfielder Christy Smith (St. Louis Park. MN) found the back of the net.

Revealing the defensive prowess of both sides, neither team could score through the 16-minute mark until the Golden Bears finally evened it up at one apiece. This initiated a four-goal spurt that put Western New England in front through the end of the period.

Down 3-5 at the break, Redlands struggled through the first seven minutes of the second half, as the Golden Bears began to pull away with an 8-3 advantage.

However, the Bulldogs found their stride with Dewan leading the charge. She uncorked back-to-back scores to inspire the Maroon and Gray offense. On these netters, junior midfielder Megan Prickett (Poway, CA) and sophomore attack player Crystal Painter (Lake George, NY) provided the assist.

Freshman midfielder Jacky Craycraft (Lake Forest, CA) kept the momentum going for the Bulldogs when she converted a free-position shot with 21:10 left on the clock.

Although Western New England's junior midfielder Katie Toomy (Northborough, MA) rallied for her team's first score in over seven minutes, Redlands quickly responded with five unanswered goals to eventually take the lead at 11-9. During this stretch, Dewan twice found the back of the net, while three other Bulldogs added to the offensive explosion.

Although the Golden Bears rallied for one more score to make it a one-goal game at 10-11, Redlands never relinquished its lead as Dewan wrapped up her impressive display with back-to-back scores, including the last one with two seconds left on the clock.

During the final minute, junior goalkeeper Ana Martinez (Pleasanton, CA) provided a heroic effort to prevent a late score by the Golden Bears, bringing the Bulldog fans to their feet. She finished with 11 saves, including seven in the second half.

Craycraft and Painter supplied two goals, while Colasurdo, Smith, and freshman midfielder KK McCaslin (Portland, OR) rounded out the Redlands offense.

McCaslin also led the team in draw controls with four, while Colasurdo racked up five ground balls.

For the Golden Bears, senior attack player Jeanmarie Barbato (Huntington Station, NY) provided four goals, while Toomy finished with a hat trick.

Redlands (7-0) hosts Denison University (OH) in Friday's non-conference showdown, which begins at 7:30 p.m.
