No. 10 Dowling Falls to Merrimack for First Loss

North Andover, MA - #10 Dowling suffered its first loss the season falling on the road to unranked Merrimack College 12-9. With the loss, Dowling drops to 12-9 while Merrimack improves to 3-1 on the year.

Dowling's offense was potent early as Nicole Moran (Lindenhurst, NY) scored the games first three goals to give the Golden Lions an early 3-0 lead. But Merrimack would prove to be tenacious, fighting back with a four goal run of their own.

A seesaw battle would ensue in a game that featured the teams being tied six times (at 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9). The stingy Merrimack defense held the Golden Lions scoreless for the final 12 minutes and used a run of three unanswered goals to breakaway from Dowling in route to victory.

Merrimack was lead by Christina McCarron who finished with four goals and one assist and goaltender Inna Hedden, who finished with 17 saves between the pipes.

Dowling's high scorer was Brooke Witkowski (Lindenhurst, NY) who picked up six assists on the afternoon. Moran finished with four goals, a season high for the sophomore.

As a team, Dowling shot a season and all-time program low .257 on the day. Head Coach Kerri McCabe added "Our offense struggled today in a critical early season contest. I am confident though that after some reflection, the team will make the necessary adjustments and we will move ahead and continue to focus on our goals from the beginning of the year."

Dowling stays in Massachusetts and will take on Bentley College, Sunday March 20 at 12:00 PM.
