Hartwick Pulls Away From Potsdam

ONEONTA, NY Hartwick outscored visiting Potsdam 9-5 in the second half to turn a tie score at halftime into a 15-11 win on Saturday at Wright Stadium.

Senior Dave Aitchison (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale), sophomores Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) and Joe Shields (Loudonville, NY/Shaker), and freshman Phil Schaefer (Holbrook, NY/Sachem N.) combined for 13 goals and seven assists on the day for the Hawks, who improve to 4-2 on the season. The Bears drop to 3-2 with the loss.

Potsdam's day was plagued with penalties as the Bears were whistled 11 times for a total of 12 minutes. The Hawks capitalized, scoring on 5 of 11 opportunities with the man-advantage.

Both teams scored four times in the first quarter with the Bears opening up three-goal leads on two separate occasions. Potsdam led by a 4-2 margin with just over five minutes remaining in the first session, but man-up goals from Brian Finnegan (East Northport, NY/Northport) and Shields in the final 3:32 evened the score. Aitchison, who led all players with four assists, accounted for both of the Hawks' helpers.

The Hawks and Bears traded goals in the second period. All four tallies came within a 4:25 span and the teams were knotted at six after 30 minutes. Hartwick held a 19-13 edge in shots with the Bears holding a slim 21-19 edge in ground balls through halftime.

Shields gave the Hawks the lead for keeps with a man-up tally from Bobby Cassidy (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) 4:04 into the third quarter. Two Hughes' tallies 1:04 apart later in the period pushed the advantage to three, 9-6, and an unassisted Aitchison tally made it 10-6.

The Bears battled back with two goals in the final minute of the third quarter to make it a 10-8 game. Hughes netted his fifth of the day two minutes into the final quarter but two Potsdam goals in the next five and a half minutes cut the deficit to just a goal, 11-10, with 7:28 to play.

The Hawks put the game away, however, with four tallies in a 4:41 span late in the half. Aitchison scored a pair and Jake Cooper (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville Manlius) and Schaefer each scored one in the span as the differential expanded to five, 15-10, with under two minutes left. Potsdam scored the day's final goal with 17 ticks left on the clock.

'Wick finished the game with a 39-33 edge in shots. The Bears held advantages in ground balls (44-36) and face-offs won (22 of 29). They also turned the ball over 20 times against the Hawks.

Aitchison ended the day with three goals and four assists, tying for a career-high for points in a game with seven. Last season, he notched a goal and six helpers versus Stevens and five goals and two assists against Elmira. Hughes added five goals, an assist, and five ground balls. He now has 11 goals in his last two games.

Shields finished the day with three goals and Schaefer scored twice, dished two assists, and contributed five ground balls. Senior defender Alex Skvarch (Syracuse, NY/Marcellus) earned a game-high three caused turnovers and a team-best seven ground balls.

Potsdam received two goals each from Sean McAullife, Ryan Paparella, and Peter Pike. Zeppy O'Geen grabbed a game-high 14 ground balls and won 21 face-offs for the Bears.

Hartwick goalie Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) made six stops in the contest. Potsdam's Mike Quinlan made nine saves.

Hartwick next plays at home on Tuesday, March 22 against Wells at 4:00 p.m. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Aurora, NY but unplayable field conditions moved the match to Wright Stadium.
