Mount Saint Vincent Tops Mount Saint Mary for First Win

Newburgh, N.Y. Using six goals from senior captain Lauren Perla (Holbrook, N.Y.) and five more from classmate Jessie Mitchell (Suffern, N.Y.) Mount Saint Vincent picked up its first win of the season with a 20-14 victory at Mount Saint Mary. In all, the Dolphins had six different players score and five players score at least twice.

After the two teams traded goals to open the scoring over the first seven minutes, the Dolphins scored three straight to open a 4-1 lead with 16:37 left in the first period. Julia Caro (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), Kristen LeGeyt (Stony Point, N.Y.) and Erin Woerner (Kings Park, N.Y.) all scored for the Mount in the stretch.

Mount Saint Vincent would go on to open its largest lead of the half, at 9-4 after back-to-back tallies from Mitchell and LeGeyt. The Knights would score two of the final three goals in the half, but the Dolphins would carry a 10-6 lead into the intermission.

The Dolphins opened the second half with four straight goals, including a pair from Perla over the first 2:46 to open a 14-6 advantage with 27:14 left in regulation time. The Knights would answer the Mount's run with five goals of their own to slice their deficit to 14-10, but a three goal spurt from Mount Saint Vincent would open the game back up to six goals, as the Dolphins held on for the final decision.

The 20 goals is a season-high for the Dolphins over the first three games of the season, as they moved to 2-0 all-time against Mount Saint Mary. Perla closed off her six goal afternoon with two goals in the final two minutes and now stands third on the team with nine goals and 10 points. She also added four groundballs and three draw controls on the day.

Mitchell continued her scoring touch on Saturday with five more goals to go along with an assist. She know has 13 goals over the last two games and leads the team with 15 goals on the season. Mitchell also picked up two groundballs and won four draw controls in the contest.

Woerner continued her steady play for the Mount with three goals and two assists and also led the way with a team-high six draw controls. She also secured four groundballs for the Dolphins. LeGeyt added three goals and two groundballs and Caro posted two assists along with her goal.

Michelle Miller (Chester, Pa.) picked up her first career win in goal for Mount Saint Vincent after making three saves. Mary Greenlese took the loss for Mount Saint Mary after making 13 saves.

The Knights were paced by four goals and three assists from Nicole Palmieri and three goals each from Sharon Cranwell, Erica Massmann and Kaileen Spadaro. Cranwell also led the Knights with four draw controls.

Overall in the game, Mount Saint Vincent held the edge in shots 39-19 and in groundballs 20-12. The Dolphins also bested the Knights in draw controls by winning 20 of the 36 taken in the contest.

The win improves Mount Saint Vincent to 1-2 overall on the season and to 1-0 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will look to even their record on Wednesday when they play host to Maritime. Opening Draw at Tibbetts Brook Park is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
