No. 3 Dowling Knocked off at NYIT for First Loss

Old Westbury, N.Y.- The No. 3 nationally ranked Dowling team dropped its first match of the season this Saturday, falling to the New York Institute of Technology, 7-10. Dowling now sits at 5-1 (2-1 ECC) on the year while the unranked Bears improve to 2-2 (1-1).

Dowling managed just one goal in the first quarter, with Vito DeMola getting the lone score at 9:48 with the assist going to Kevin Sabo. NYIT matched that with four goals of their own in the opening period, as four separate Bears earned one each to give their team a 4-1 lead going into the second.

The Golden Lions quickly got back on track in the next quarter, scoring five unanswered goals, including two from Dan Abbene, to take a 6-4 lead at the half.

Not backing down, the Bears went on a 4-0 run of their own in the third quarter, holding an 8-6 advantage over the Golden Lions after 45 minutes of play.

Dowling was able to get just one goal in the final quarter, a shot from Dan Abbene with 6:02 on the clock for the hat trick, but NYIT got two more on the board to take a 10-7.

Ryan Dougherty had 14 saves on the day for Dowling, while William McGee picked up the win with 21 saves for the Bears. Louis Riley continued his strong play at faceoff, winning 15 of 18 for the Golden Lions.

Dowling looks to rebound next Saturday as they host defending national champion and currently ranked No. 1 C.W. Post next Saturday. Game time is 1:00 PM.
