SUNY Maritime Holds off Massachusetts Maritime

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 19, 2011) SUNY Maritime earned its first victory of the season over its rivals from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, 7-5, Saturday afternoon at Reinhart Field. The win improves the Privateers record to 1-5 overall, while the Buccaneers fall to 1-2.

The Privateers had to hold back a late Mass Maritime rally, as the Bucs scored three unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to climb back within two.

Senior Seth Collins (Owego, N.Y./Owego Free Academy) recorded two goals and one assist to lead the way for New York's Maritime academy, while Michael Hanratty (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memorial) tallied two goals and sophomore Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) collected two assists. Also scoring for the Privateers were senior Alexander Korb (Islip, N.Y./Islip), his first of the season, sophomore Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore) and freshman Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield).

Junior Steven Tonn (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and senior goalie Keith Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) each grabbed a team-high three ground balls. Tonn also caused three turnovers, while senior TJ Beaudette (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park Memoral) caused a game-best five turnovers. Messina was strong in net, stopping five Buccaneer shots.

SUNY Maritime had a 5-1 lead at the half and built it up to 7-2 before Massachusetts Maritime started its rally. The Bucs were led by senior Jack Bickley, who registered two goals and one assists while, senior Ryan Linn scored two goals. Freshman goalie Jack Murphy registered 20 saves in the losing effort and also had an assist on the Buccaneers final goal.

SUNY Maritime returns to the field this Wednesday, March 23, when the Privateers open Skyline Conference action against Mount Saint Mary. The game, which will be Maritime's first away from Reinhart Field this season, is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Blue Knights' Kaplan Field.
