Coast Guard Cruises by Southern Connecticut

New London, Conn. Coast Guard hosted Southern Connecticut on Friday evening (March 18) at Cadet Memorial Field and cruised to a 23-2 win in front of a big home crowd.

Behind big outputs from 1/c Kyle Ennis (Mayo, Md./Dematha) and 3/c Austin English (Kent Island, Md./Kent Island), and 14 other players registering goals on the stat sheet, the Bears move to 3-1 on the season.

Coast Guard came out firing, opening up an eventual 11-0 lead late in the first quarter. Initiating the scoring was senior midfielder 1/c Kyle Ennis with the first of his three goals, two assists and nine groundballs on the evening. 2/c Nick Zablotny (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) got in on the scoring next on a nice assist from 1/c Matt Chase (Baltimore, Md./Lochraven) to make it 2-0.

Coast Guard retained possession on the face-off and English scored on a creative diving wrap around shot beating his defender and the goalie. Not satisfied, English netted his second and third goals over the next two minutes for a 5-0 Bears lead.

After a successful clear, English fed attackman 1/c Matt Chase on a low shot from the crease to make it 6-0. Then Kyle Ennis made it 7-0 on an unassisted blast midway up the left wing.

Adding the eighth Coast Guard goal was 3/c Steven Danseglio (Islip Terrace, NY/East Islip) on a pass from behind the net from 1/c midfielder Jimmy McCormack (Goshen, NY/Goshen). 2/c Andrew Breen (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) scooped up the subsequent face-off and scored on a nice individual effort with the long pole.

Momentum stayed with the home team to end the quarter as the Bears continued to control the ball. 4/c Eric (EJ) Schmid (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) scored on a nice dodge-and-shoot move from the top of the box. At 13:46, midfielder Kyle Ennis netted a blast off a rebound from the SCSU goalie that rolled to the top of the box as Coast Guard took an 11-0 lead into the second.

The Bears clawed at the Owls throughout the second quarter shutting down clears, getting opportunities on offense and beating their opponent to loose groundballs. English scored his fourth at 14:04 in the second on a nice individual effort from the wing to make it 12-0.

2/c Dan Symanski (Vienna, Va./Madison) won the next draw and 1/c Matt Chase scored on a nice dodge-and-shoot from behind the cage. SCSU answered less than two minutes later, but the Bears were quick to dissolve any momentum gained as 3/c Jay Lord (Simsbury, Conn./Westminster) scored off the subsequent face-off.

Coast Guard closed out the scoring in the first half with a great outside bounce shot from 4/c Paul Dell'isola (Bethesda, Md./Georgetown Prep), a nice inside effort by 4/c Stuart Carley (Houston, Texas/James E. Taylor), Lord's second on a nice dodge-and-feed from Kyle Ennis and 4/c Robert Scaduto's (Bellmore, NY/Chaminade) first college tally as the Navy and Orange led 18-1 after 30 minutes.

2/c midfielder Mark Ryan (Phoenix, Ariz./Bernards) opened the second half scoring with a worm burner to the lower corner of the goal. At this point, Nick Zablotny got in the giving mood and was involved in two of the most attractive goals of the game. Zablotny dodged from the top to free himself before firing a great pass that Devin Quinn (Voluntown, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) caught in mid-air and deposited in the back of the net. Zablotny delivered again on an almost identical play to 4/c Scott Pratz (Leesburg, Va./Heritage) to close the quarter at 21-1.

The scoring pace finally slowed for the Bears in the fourth, when a couple of long poles got in on the scoring action as part of the "Goals for Long Poles" program. 2/c Conor Breckenridge (Novato, Calif./Novato) scored on a great individual effort scooping a groundball on the face-off and taking it to the rack from the wing with almost no angle and putting a rifled shot right under the crossbar.
