Visiting W&J Shuts Down Centre to Stay Undefeated

DANVILLE, Ky. -- Seven different Presidents scored goals as Washington & Jefferson remained undefeated after topping Centre (Ky.) 10-2 in women's lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon at Farris Stadium.

W&J (5-0) extended its regular-season win streak to 11 matches (last loss was to Ohio Wesleyan; 4/3/10). The Presidents have also won 14 consecutive regular-season road games dating back to the 2008 season.

W&J fired out to a 3-0 lead midway through the first half on goals from junior attacker Lauren Novak (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland), sophomore midfielder Brittany Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md./St. Paul's SFG) and freshman midfielder Amy Anderson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair).

Sarah Mastey scored on a free-position shot to narrow the gap to 3-1, but W&J tacked on four goals in the final 11 minutes to grab a 7-1 advantage at halftime. Senior attacker Courtney Schrock (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) capped the four-goal spurt which also included goals from Fradkin and junior midfielders Brittney Oake (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) and Liz Turcik (Ligonier, Pa./Miss Halls School).

Freshman attacker Jamie Battaglia (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) made it an 8-1 lead with her first collegiate goal early in the second half and Oake fired home two more goals to clinch the win.

Sophomore goalie Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) entered the match ranked among the top 15 in NCAA Division III in goals-against average (6.75) and save percentage (.565) and only improved upon those numbers. She played the first 48 minutes and recorded 11 saves, including nine in the first half. Senior Amber Kuntz (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) stopped a pair of shots in the final 12 minutes to help preserve the win.

W&J held a 25-22 shot advantage, while Centre (6-2) used a 20-18 ground ball edge. The Presidents also grabbed nine of the match's 13 draw controls.

Washington & Jefferson continues its spring break trip south this weekend when it plays Birmingham-Southern (Friday, 7:30 pm) and Millsaps (Saturday, 11:00 am) in Alabama.
