Wildcats Claw Back But Fall Short to Binghamton

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Alanna Parker (Spring Valley, Calif.) pushed her goal streak to 17 straight games and Erin Doherty (Cincinnati, Ohio) had four points, but a four-goal halftime deficit proved to be too much for Davidson to overcome in falling 14-10 to visiting Binghamton on Tuesday evening at Richardson Stadium in women's lacrosse.

The Wildcats fell to 1-8 on the season as they were playing the Bearcats for the first time in program history. Binghamton, playing its second game in as many days, and currently on a five-game road swing, moved to 2-7.

Parker pushed her goal total to a team-best 20 on the season with three scores. Doherty tallied a pair of goals and assists for her season-best four points, while Ann Fucigna (Darien, Conn.) netted two goals.

Binghamton put five players in the books with a multi-goal game. Ali Castiglie and Beth Moore led the way with three goals each, while Lis Zuern registered a game-high five points on two goals and three assists.

Trailing 12-7 with eight minute to go, Davidson tried to make one last charge. Sophomore Jessica Palfrey (Bronxville, N.Y.) sparked a three-goal run with a free position goal at the 6:49 mark. The sophomore matched her season-best with two goals and has four on the season.

Doherty and Ann Fucigna (Darien, Conn.) followed shortly after with back-to-back goals to cut the Bearcat lead down to two, 12-10, with 3:28 remaining. BU then burned a timeout.

Doherty's score came on a rebound shot after Davidson missed on a free-position attempt, while Fucigna connected on one of four Wildcat free-position shots on the evening.

Davidson then got the draw control coming out of the timeout, but turned the ball over at the 3:16 mark and never was able to get it back. The Bearcats would go on to tack on two more insurance goals in the final 1:21 of the game.

Davidson played from behind from the start, trailing 4-1 after a Zuern goal with 16:57 on the clock in the first half.

Doherty then got the 'Cats to within one at 4-3, scoring her eighth goal of the game, and then a minute later at the 10:44 mark, assisted on Parker's score in the middle of the circle.

Four straight goals spanning through the rest of the first half and into the start of the second half pushed the BU lead to five at 8-3 and Davidson had to play catch-up the rest of the way.

Scores by Palfrey and Parker 55 seconds apart got the 'Cats to within three, 9-6, but the Bearcats rattled off three more goals over the next 13 minutes to push its lead back to 12-7.

Lauren Vanhusen (Great Falls, Va.) led the defense with three groundballs and a caused turnover. Davidson as a team had eight groundballs to Binghamton's 13.

The 'Cats held a large margin in draw controls, hauling in 19 of them to the Bearcats' seven, and were just three shots behind the Bearcats, 25-22. Doherty and Erin McGuire (Bishopville, Md.) each had four draw controls, while Fucigna and Parker each fired off five shots.

The Wildcats return to National Lacrosse Conference action with a 12:00 p.m. contest on Sunday, Mar. 27 at Jacksonville.
