#7 Mercy Beats Pace in Battle of the Lower Hudson

In the Battle of the Lower Hudson, the #7 Mercy College men's lacrosse team (6-1) defeated Pace University (3-2) 11-7 today, in a game played in Purchase, N.Y. The game was played in 35 degree temperatures, with intermittent freezing rain and snow.

The first quarter was an exciting one, with seven total goals scored. Mercy's Sal Spinelli (East Islip, N.Y./East Islip/Suffolk CC) scored a man-up goal on a feed from Quadear Mike (Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) to open scoring less than two minutes into the game. Pace's Kevin Kadlick tied the score just 60 seconds later, before a 3-0 run for the host Mavericks put Mercy up 4-1. Pace banged home two late goals in the quarter, and, after 15 minutes, Mercy led 4-3.

Mercy controlled play in the second stanza, taking 12 shots. Yet, only one found its mark, as Spinelli scored his third goal of the game.

In the third quarter, sophomore Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) put Mercy up 7-3 with the first of his four second-half goals. But the Setters continued to fight hard, netting two goals to close out the third quarter. With 15 minutes to play, Mercy led 7-5.

Kadlick scored his third and final goal for Pace early in the fourth, cutting the margin to one goal, 7-6. The Mavericks would go on a 4-1 run to end the game, with three of those goals coming from Marzocca. The remaining goal came from sophomore long pole Mike Munch (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon).

In goal, Mercy's T. J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) made 10 stops, while his Pace counterpart Kevin Grady made 17.
