Alvernia Rolls in Second Half to Down Arcadia

Glenside, Pa. (Mar. 24, 2011) - Alvernia University (6-0, 3-0) held just a two-goal lead at halftime, then outscored Arcadia University (1-3, 0-3) 11-2 in the second half for a 21-10 win improving to a program record 6-0 for the second time in the last three years.

Sophomore Alyssa Verrillo (North Wales, Pa./Archbishop Wood) scored five goals and Felicia Sippel (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) added four to pace the Crusaders. Jenn Czarnecki (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert) played the full 60 minutes in net and made eight saves.

Alvernia opened the game with the first two goals, the first from Sippel and the second form Verrillo assisted by junior Sam Landis (Watsontown, Pa./Warrior Run). Arcadia came back with three straight goals putting the Crusaders behind for the first time this season.

Alvernia freshman Hannah Dorsch (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) leveled the score on a free position goal and the Crusaders rattled off four straight--all from the free position--for a 6-3 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half.

The two teams traded goals from there with Arcadia running off a streak of three straight to pull within a goal at 8-7 before Alvernia closed the half with two of the last three goals for a 10-8 lead at the break.

Sippel set up each of the first two goals of the second half, the first from Heather Coppola (Fulton, N.Y./G. Ray Bodley) and the second by Sarah George (West Chester, Pa./Bayard Rustin) and the Crusaders scored four straight for a 14-8 lead.

Arcadia scored a single goal with 25 minutes to go, but Alvernia answered with another streak of four goals for a commanding 18-9 lead with 15 minutes to go.

Alvernia goes for a record seventh straight win on Saturday when it travles to King's College.
