Tigers Come up Short in Home Opener vs. Widener

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (March 1, 2011) - After starting off with a quick 2-0 lead over the visiting Widener University from Pennsylvania, the Pride of Widener came back to win the game in a close 12-9 victory over the Tigers.

Before the first minute of the game was accounted for in the books, Occidental freshman Tori Larson and sophomore Sarah Kessler scored quick back-to-back goals, off of draw controls, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead to start the game. Larson and Kessler both obtained hat tricks on the night, as sophomores Isabel Osgood-Roach and Lauren Wemple were both able to get the ball in the back of the goal as well.

The Tigers would maintain the lead through the first ten minutes of the match, before Widener University would tie up the game 2-2 off of two goals by Widener attacker Rachel Porter. Porter, who scored 4 goals for the Pride, was one of six Widener players to score on the night.

After going into the half down 6-4, Occidental would repeat the first half pattern as sophomores Wemple and Kessler would score two quick goals within the first two minutes, evening the score at 6-6.

The game continued into what turned out to be an arms race, before the Pride found separation with 17 minutes left, increasing their lead 10-8 and would refuse to look back before notching a 12-9 victory.

Goalies for both teams were able to make key saves throughout the match, keeping their teams in the game. Tiger goalkeeper sophomore Kylie McPherson came away with 8 saves on the night, keeping the Tigers within reach throughout the game.

Occidental midfielder Rebecca Belding and defender Charlotte Bromley would play a large role in the game, as they would combine for 7 ground balls. While, midfielders Haley Gandsey and Emily Fowler would both disrupt the Pride offence with a couple caused turnovers.

Occidental (0-2, 0-1 SCIAC) will return to Patterson Field, on the home of Occidental college Sunday, March 6 to face-off with the Lions of Emerson College. First draw is set for 1:00 p.m.
