Oxy Prevails vs. Emerson for First Victory

LOS ANGELES, Calif., (March 6, 2011) Occidental showed a true team effort, both offensively and defensively, as they secured their first win of the season over Emerson College. In a game that had eight Tigers score, Occidental commanded a quick 4-0 lead within the first 7 minutes and refused to look back.

The Tigers maintained the upper hand throughout the match leading in shots (30-13), ground balls (16-7), draw controls (15-9) and caused turn-overs (11-2). Sophomore Tori Larson led everyone with five goals on the day, while Freshman Rebecca Belding netted her first hat trick of the season. Six other Tigers, Hilary Olson, Isabel Osgood-Roach, Lucy Vallejo-Anderson, Lauren Wemple, Sarah Kessler and Abigail Williams, were able to get the ball in the back of the net as well. Wemple and Belding both demonstrated great ball movement as they led the team with a combined 7 assists.

Tiger midfielders Kessler, Larson and Belding began the game in similar fashion, with four quick goals as the Tigers dominated early with draw controls. The Lions of Emerson College scored their first goal nine minutes into the game and would receive their second with 14 minutes left in the half. Both teams would then hold each other scoreless for the remaining 15 minutes, as Occidental would go into the intermission with a 5-2 lead.

Emerson would be the first to score in the second half as Senior Katie Dodge would score on a free possession shot. Each team would trade goals for the following fifteen minutes, neither letting the other run away with the game. Emerson would come within one point of the Tigers halfway into the second stanza, as Lion midfielder Chelsea Phillips would score on a free position shot, making the score 7-6.

Occidental would use the next five minutes to go on a commanding 5-0 run and refuse to look back. Allowing only one more goal by Lion attacker Laura Miley and following it up by three more Tiger goals to finish out the game 15-7.

The Tigers demonstrated a great defensive effort throughout the game, as well. Freshman Emily Fowler and Sophomore Haley Gandsey joined Osgood-Roach, Larson, Belding, Vallejo-Anderson, Wemple and Kessler in a combined 11 caused turn-overs on the game. The Tigers refused to allow Emerson College to retain any sort of momentum, breaking up their offensive chemistry throughout the match.

Midfielders Larson, Fowler, Vallejo-Anderson, Wemple, Kessler, Morrissey and Belding would combine for 16 ground balls, with Belding attaining five of them.

Tiger goal keeper Kylie McPherson would obtain her first decision of the season while making four saves during the game.

Occidental will look to even out their record as they travel to Redlands Sunday, March 13 to make up the game, which was postponed earlier in the season due to weather. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
