Tigers Can't Keep Pace with Western New England

LOS ANGELES, Calif. (March 15, 2011) Western New England showed up to play Tuesday evening on Patterson Field and left with a dominating 19-9 win over the Tigers. After the Golden Bears obtained three quick goals in the first five minutes of the game, the Tigers struggled to find enough momentum to slow them down.

Occidental got onto the board with their first goal, on a free position shot by Freshman Tori Larson at the 25-minute mark. Larson would go on to complete a hat trick, her third on the season.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, Western New England would go on an 8-0 run over the next ten minutes, commanding a 11-1 lead.

Tiger Midfielder Lucy Vellejo-Anderson would end the Golden Bears run with an unassisted goal with 13:45 left in the first half. It is at this point that the Tigers appeared with a new surge of energy.

The Tigers traded goals with the Golden Bears for the remaining 40 minutes of the game, with five more Tigers getting on the scoreboard. Scoring 8 to the Golden Bears 9 in the remaining minutes.

The Tigers showed impressive ball movement around the goal in the second half, as sophomore Lauren Wemple did a great job feeding the ball from behind the goal getting two assists on the night.

Occidental showed a major shift in energy, the second half as they led the Golden Bears in ground balls and shots on goal. Freshman Rebecca Belding would lead the Tigers in ground balls on the night.

Defensively Haley Gandsey and Laura Mohler did their part in keeping the Golden Bears from increasing their lead, combining for 4 of the teams 7 caused turn-overs.

The Tigers (1-3, 01 SCIAC) will host Goucher College Friday March 18, on Patterson Field on the home of Occidental College. First draw is set for 7:00 PM.
