Hopper Paces Florida Southern Past Lenoir-Rhyne

Florida Southern's Ike Hopper had seven points enroute to a 14-6 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne Friday night at Bryant Stadium. With the win, the Moccasins set a new single season record with five wins and three conference wins. Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 2-8 and 0-4 in the Deep South Conference on the season.

The Mocs struck first as Corey Brown's shot went between the pipes one minute into the contest. Minutes later A.J. Monteleone found Kevin Naslonski for a goal to give the Mocs a 2-0 advantage. The Bears battled back, as Tyler Kotch scored a man-up goal to cut the lead to 2-1. The Bears evened the score 2-2, as Fred Waddle scored with 1:08 left in the first quarter.

The Moccasins defense came out strong in the second quarter shutting out Lenoir-Rhyne, while forcing six turnovers. The offensive got four goals from four different players to take a 6-2 lead into the intermission.

The hot shooting continued in the third quarter as Hopper found Mat Thompson twice for goals, giving the Mocs a 8-2 lead. Sam Ashton cut the lead to 8-3 with 1:31 left in the third quarter. The Mocs responded 15 seconds later as Adam Ismaeil picked up the ground ball off the face-off drove the field and scored. Stephen Boyle and Hopper each added another goal in the final seconds of the quarter to give the Moccasins a commanding 11-3 lead.

Lenoir-Rhyne took advantage of a Mocs penalty as Anothony Mangili shot got past the keeper. Both teams got back-to-back goals which kept the Mocs lead at 7. With 1:42 left in the game Kyle Rutkowski picked up his second assist of the game, as he found Boyle for the final score of the contest.

Hopper, Boyle, and Thompson each finished with three goals, while Brown added two.

Andrew Almansberger had 14 saves while improving his record to 4-2 on the season. Ismaeil and Brad Fretti each tallied six ground balls.

The Moccasins will return to action Wednesday night at Bryant Stadium when they take on Lindenwood University in the final regular season home game. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
