Washington & Jefferson Tops Birmingham-Southern in OT

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Senior attacker Courtney Shrock (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) and junior attacker Lauren Novak (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) both scored goals in overtime to lift Washington & Jefferson to a 12-10 women's lacrosse victory over Birmingham-Southern on Friday evening.

The Presidents (6-0) remained unbeaten in 2011 and stretched their regular-season, road win streak to 15 games. W&J has also won 12 consecutive regular-season matches overall.

Birmingham-Southern (3-4) scored the first three goals, but W&J rallied to take a 7-5 halftime lead. Junior midfielder Brittney Oake (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) scored three times in the opening 30 minutes, including twice in the final 1:45.

Schrock netted a goal just over three minutes into the second half for an 8-5 advantage, but the Panthers tied the game with three-straight goals in a span of 1:42.

Novak gave W&J one-goal leads with scores at the 19:18 and 5:53 marks, but BSC forced overtime on an Alexis Sweda goal 67 seconds before the final horn.

Novak added her third goal 43 seconds into the extra session on a free-position shot, while Schrock scored at the 3:01 mark off a pass from Oake. The W&J defense limited BSC to only two shots in overtime.

Oake finished with three goals and one assist, while Schrock scored four times. Sophomore goalie Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) made four saves for her 19th career win.

Chelsea Van Voorhis led Birmingham-Southern with three goals and one assist. Katie Bates kept the hosts alive by making 12 saves in the cage.

W&J outshot the Panthers by a 30-21 margin and collected 16 draw controls, eight of which were grabbed by Oake.

The Presidents will play their second game in Alabama tomorrow at noon when it faces Millsaps (Miss.) at noon on the same field.
