Spartans Get First NEWLA Win with Thumping of Elms

CASTLETON, Vt. Junior Stephanie Paproski (Newtown, Conn.), freshman Amanda Flodstrom (Stratham, N.H.) and junior Angelica Mazzola (Centerport, N.Y.) scored three goals each to pace Castleton past Elms, 23-0, in New England Womens Lacrosse Alliance (NEWLA) action on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Stadium.

The Spartans improve to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in NEWLA play. The Blazers fall to 0-4 overall (0-1 NEWLA).

Senior midfielder Marie Van Der Kar (Manchester, Vt.), Elizabeth Haggerty (Centerport, N.Y.) and Sarah Clark (Guilford, Vt.) added two goals apiece. Freshman Meaghan Heuer (Wading River, N.Y.), Jessica Taplin (Barre, Vt.), Taryn Smith (Southbury, Conn.), Blake Wardwell (Bridgewater, Vt.), Katelyn Nardini (Scotia, N.Y.), Julia Lesure (Vernon, Vt.), JenniLee Mark (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Cori Healy (Jefferson Township, N.J.) pitched in with a goal each.

Elms goaltender Annette Dzidek (Chicopee, Mass.) made 13 saves in net in the loss. Backup goaltender and freshman, Ashly Neal, made on save for the Spartans.

Mazzola opened up the scoring for Castleton with a free position shot at 28:18 of the first half netting her fifth of the season.

Moments later, Paproski found the back of the net on a beautiful feed from Flodstrom directly in front of the net and finished for her fourth of the season.

Van Der Kar made it 3-0 at 26:23 of the first half scoring her 13th marker of the season on an assist from Taplin and never looked back.

Castleton led 14-0 at halftime and won the draw control match up, 21-3. The Spartans grabbed 29 groundballs including a game-high eight from Van Der Kar. Castleton was successful on all three clear attempts while Elms went 0-13 on the afternoon.

The Spartans return to action tomorrow, on the road, against Southern Maine at 4:00 pm.
