Washington & Jefferson Shuts out Millsaps
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Just over 12 hours after dispatching Birmingham-Southern in overtime, the Washington & Jefferson women's lacrosse team returned to the same field and crushed Millsaps (Miss.) 17-0 on Saturday afternoon.
The Presidents extended their unblemished record to 7-0, while the Majors, who are coached by former W&J assistant Tracy Cepnio, fell to 1-9 overall. Millsaps is fielding a varsity women's lacrosse team for the first time in 2011.
Washington & Jefferson was led by a career-high, five-goal effort from sophomore attacker Megan Kelly (Pittsburgh, Pa./Seton LaSalle). Senior attacker Courtney Schrock (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) added a hat trick, while junior midfielder Brittney Oake (Belle Mead, N.J./Montgomery) provided three goals and five ground balls, while also causing a pair of turnovers.
Sophomores midfielder Kelsey Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) and Brittany Fradkin (Owings Mills, Md./St. Paul's SFG) both found the back of the net twice, while senior attacker Nikki Lu (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) notched one goal and one assist.
Sophomore Julia McLellan (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) and senior Amber Kuntz (Edinboro, Pa./General McLane) combined on the shutout for the Presidents. Both goalies made one save. Junior defender Cayla Grodotzke (Merrick, N.Y./Sanford H. Calhoun) helped the defense with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
The Presidents, who recorded a 15-4 draw control edge, return to action on Saturday when they begin a three-game home stand by hosting Wittenberg at 2:00 pm. W&J defeated Wittenberg in Ohio in 2009 by a 12-10 margin.
