Etrasco, Frey Lift BU to Victory Against Binghamton

BOSTON - Junior Hannah Frey and sophomore Danielle Etrasco scored four goals each to lift the Boston University lacrosse team to a 15-6 victory against Binghamton in its America East opener at Nickerson Field on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Terriers improved to 5-4 (1-0 AE).

Senior Erica Baumgartner (1g, 2a), juniors Molly Swain (3g) and Catie Tilton (1g, 3a) and freshman Sydney Godett (1g, 1a) also tallied multi-point games. Baumgartner's two assists tied her with Mary Beth Miller ('06) for most career assists in program history (108).

Senior Rachel Collins collected a game-high five draw controls and classmate Kate Cipolletti registered a career-high four ground balls.

Freshman goalkeeper Christina Sheridan started for the Terriers and made two saves through 48:28. Sophomore Kim Elsworth then entered the contest and turned aside one shot. Binghamton goalkeeper Lauren Scott made eight saves as the Bearcats fell to 2-8 (0-1 AE).

BU held advantages in ground balls (15-13) and draw controls (17-6), while executing 4 of 7 free-position shots. Binghamton was 0 for 2 on free-position shots and 11 for 16 on clears. The Terriers were 10 for 11 on clearing attempts.

BU started the game on a 5-1 run in the first 6:52 of the game. From behind the net, Tilton set up both Swain's and Etrasco's goals at 1:53 and 4:31, respectively, to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead.

After Lis Zuern halved the deficit, BU scored three straight markers as it took a 5-1 advantage. Frey gave the Terriers a 3-1 lead when she sent a pass from Baumgartner past Scott. With 16:45 left in the half, senior Corcoran Downey collected a ground ball near the Terrier cage, raced down the field and scored high. Godett added a free-position goal at 15:52.

The Bearcats answered with three straight tallies in a 5:49 span to make it a 5-4 game. Zuern added two goals, the second with an assist from Ali Castiglie, and then Lizzie Wright scored with 1:08 remaining.

With just 22 seconds left in the opening frame, Frey connected on a pass from Baumgartner to give BU a 6-4 lead.

In the second half, the Terriers scored eight straight markers, as they also held Binghamton to just two goals. Etrasco scored three of the next four BU goals, including two on free-position shots.

After the Massapequa, N.Y., native extended the Terrier lead to 7-4 with a free-position goal, she scored off an assist from Godett at 6:04. Swain then added a tally before Etrasco's second free-position goal with 20:12 left gave BU a 10-4 lead.

Baumgartner made it an 11-4 game at 14:51 before both Frey and Tilton connected in a 2:21 span. Swain then added a free-position goal with 11:44 left, as the Terriers took a 14-4 advantage.

Beth Moore broke the 22:21 Bearcat scoreless drought with 8:47 left. BU answered 26 seconds later when Frey connected on Collins' pass. Moore tallied again for Binghamton with 3:38 remaining to account for the 15-6 final.

The Terriers will return to action on Saturday (April 2) when they host UMBC. Game time is set at 1:00 p.m.
