O'Donoghue, Kendall lead Wingate Past Lees-McRae

BANNER ELK, N.C. -- Colin O'Donoghue and Garrett Kendall each tallied four goals to lead Wingate University to a 14-4 victory against Lees-McRae College in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon.

Wingate (5-6) outshot the Bobcats (0-8) by a 47-29 margin, including a 32-18 advantage in shots on goals, while converting 22 of 23 clear attempts. Lees-McRae converted 16 of 17 clear attempts as the Bulldogs held a 35-31 edge in ground balls.

O'Donoghue and Kendall each recorded a game-high four goals for Wingate, while Bryan Bayliss and Derek Watts each posted a pair of tallies. Danny Dlugozima made 14 saves to earn the victory between the pipes for the Bulldogs.

Danny Ives (Cheadle, Cheshire, England) paced the Bobcats with two goals, swelling his season tally to a team-high 10 strikes. Brett Yusiewicz (Chapel Hill, N.C.) added a tally as Kyle Judge (Hampstead, Md.) recorded his first career goal. Andy Nesdill (Phoenix, Ariz.) played the full 60 minutes in goal for the Bobcats, recording 18 saves.

The teams traded a pair of goals to open the game, with Ives evening the score at 2-2 with 3:29 left in the first quarter. Bayliss then gave the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead with 38 ticks left in the first, scoring on the man advantage off a pass from O'Donoghue.

Wingate turned it on in the second, outscoring the Bobcats by a 5-0 margin in the period to take an 8-2 lead into the intermission on O'Donoghue's first of the game with 1:17 left in the half. Bayliss added to the lead early in the third, scoring a shorthanded goal 10 seconds into the second half to push the margin to 9-2.

Ives answered just over a minute later, trimming the margin to 9-3 with his second of the afternoon at the 13:40 mark. O'Donoghue answered with three of Wingate's next four goals to push the margin to 13-3. Judge capped the day's scoring with his first of the season at the 6:06 mark of the fourth quarter, redirecting a perfect pass from Quinn Struble (Durham, N.C.) into the back of the net from close range.

Lees-McRae returns to action on Wednesday when the Bobcats travel to Misenheimer, N.C. to take on Pfeiffer University in a Conference Carolinas matchup at 4:00 p.m.

Banner Elk, N.C.---Wingate sophomore attack Colin O'Donoghue (Cranberry Township, Pa.) had four goals and an assist, while sophomore midfield Garrett Kendall (Greer, S.C.) added four goals to lead the Bulldogs past the Bobcats of Lees-McRae 14-4 in action Saturday afternoon. Wingate improves to 5-6 overall, while Lees-McRae falls to 0-8 on the season.

Kendall opened up the scoring for the Bulldogs in the first period. A goal from junior attack Bryan Bayliss (Lorton, Va.) gave Wingate a 3-2 lead going into the second frame.

The 'Dogs would dominate the second frame, out-scoring Lees-McRae 5-0 to take an 8-2 lead into intermission. Sophomore midfield Derek Watts (Winston-Salem, N.C.) and junior midfield Travis Barrett (Andover, N.J.) netted the first two goals of the period, while Kendall followed with two straight to put Wingate on top by five. O'Donoghue scored with 1:17 remaining in the half to push the lead to six.

Bayliss scored 10 seconds into the third, giving the Bulldogs their seventh consecutive goal and a 9-2 advantage. O'Donoghue followed with a pair of goals, while a goal from Watts with nine seconds remaining in the third made the score 12-3. Barrett assisted on O'Donoghue's fourth goal of the afternoon 4:28 into the final stanza, while Kendall netted Wingate's final goal of the afternoon at the 8:31 mark.

Junior goalie Danny Dlugozima (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) racked up 14 saves for the Bulldogs, allowing only four goals on 29 shots faced. The Bulldogs return to action Tuesday, traveling to St. Andrews Presbyterian College for a 4:00 p.m. start.
