Oates Caps CC Comeback Against Denison

SEWANEE, Tenn. Ginna Oates scored the go-ahead goal on a free-position shot with 2:06 remaining in the game to give Colorado College a 12-9 victory over Denison University on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Tennessee.

Abby Fink gave CC a chance to come back by making nine of her 13 saves during the second half, and Elise Burchard added a pair of insurance goals during the final 1:08 to help the Tigers improve to 6-1 overall.

Back-to-back scores 1:23 by Oates and Anna Crosby in a span of 1:23 gave Colorado College a 9-7 lead with 6:27 to play, but the Big Red tied the contest a little more than two minutes later when Molly Sbrega and Olivia Shiland found the net 21 seconds apart.

Denison tallied the first three goals and built a 5-1 lead after Jenny Strathern added a free-position goal with 7:19 to play in the first half.

The Tigers closed to within two after Crosby and Grace Maloney scored late in the opening stanza, and then tied the game when Frances Staadt struck for a pair of goals during the opening 2:38 of the second half.

After the teams traded goals midway through the second frame, Burchard gave CC its first lead on a free-position shot with 10:42 to go. The Big Red's Alex Thurner answered 41 seconds later to knot the score for the third time, setting up a pressure-filled final 10 minutes.

Burchard paced the Colorado College attack with three goals, while Crosby and Oates had two apiece.

Maloney had team highs of six ground balls with three caused turnovers for the Tigers.

Sbrega, Shiland, Strathern and Turner scored two goals apiece for Denison.

The Big Red's Grace Brodenmann stopped 13 shots, while Shiland paced the defense with five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Colorado College is idle until April 1 when the Tigers visit Pacific University.
