RPI Tops Potsdam to Win Third Straight

POTSDAM, N.Y. Seniors Jen Greenwood and Afton Marshall each tallied three goals with three assists to lead Rensselaer to a 13-10 victory at SUNY Potsdam. The win, which is RPI's third straight, lifts the Engineers record to 4-1 on the season. The Bears slip to 3-4 overall.

It was an exciting first half as the homestanding Bears jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind tallies from Maribeth Simmons and Whitney Boshart through the first eight minutes of the contest. The Engineers answered as Greenwood (Newtown, CT/Newtown) and senior Stephanie Caouette (Wynantskill, NY/Columbia) scored within 38 seconds of one another to tie it up at 2-all.

The team's traded goals and SUNY Potsdam held a 4-3 lead as Simmons scored off an assist from Boshart, but the Engineers made a strong statement with five straight goals to make it a 4-8 advantage with 2:37 left to play. Marshall (Windham, NH/Salem) led the charge for Rensselaer as she assisted on the first two goals by Alissa Peterson (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard) and Madeline Sisson (Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) while scoring the final two tallies.

Leading 8-5 to start the second half, Caouette notched her third of the contest less than four minutes in to make it a four-goal difference at 26:55. SUNY Potsdam came back as Aubrey MacIntosh scored on the free position and Carly Richards tallied to cut the deficit to two (9-7) with 24:12 remaining in the game.

Sisson and Greenwood helped the visitors stretch the lead back to four (11-7), but the Bears continued to press in the offensive zone as Richards netted her second of the day to make it an 11-8 game with 13:24 to play.

The Engineers regained the momentum heading into the final 10 minutes as rookie Rachel Scofield (Albany, NY/South Colonie) scored her first career goal and Greenwood followed with a free position shot for a 13-8 advantage with 7:49 on the clock. The Bears would make a final run as Simmons and Kathleen Frear tallied in the final 3:03, but RPI held on for the victory.

In addition to Greenwood and Marshall, the Engineers saw Caouette add three tallies. Sisson finished with two goals on the day with the other scores coming from Peterson and Scofield. In the net, sophomore Allie Arnal (Lakewood, NY/Phillips Exeter Academy) picked up the victory, stopping seven shots.

For the Bears, Simmons had three goals, while Richards and Boshart each posted two goals and an assist. Three others scored for SUNY Potsdam, while netminder Kaci Milligan made eight shots in the loss.
