Carraro won 18 of 23 faceoffs and grabbed nine ground balls for Denver. Freshman Jamie Faus (Lakeville, Conn.) made nine saves in the win.

"Air Force is a tough team, but we came together in this one. When our defense failed our offense was there to pick them up. When our offense failed our defense was there," head coach Bill Tierney said. "We are starting to gel as a team, but we need to keep getting these ECAC wins."

Denver controlled the ball for much of the opening quarter and got out to a 2-0 lead following goals from sophomore Cameron Flint (Georgetown, Ontario) and freshman Jeremy Noble (Orangeville, Ontario). The Pioneers outshot AFA 8-3 in the period and led 2-0 after 15 minutes.

The Pioneers continued to dominate in the second quarter, getting goals from Demopoulos and senior Todd Baxter (Eden Prairie, Minn.), grabbing a 4-0 lead before Erik Smith put Air Force on the board, making it a 4-1 game at intermission. Denver won 6 of 7 faceoffs in the half and was 6 of 6 on its clear attempts. AFA cleared 5 of 6 attempts.

Matthews netted his second goal of the quarter at the 9:03 mark and was mimicked soon after by Demopoulos and Carraro. Matt Puleo scored his first-career goal for AFA to stop the Pioneer onslaught, but Lay answered immediately for Denver, giving the Pioneers a 10-2 lead. Kyle Cassady, Zack Carroll and Adam Paranka attempted to stem the tide for the Falcons, scoring three unanswered goals to finish the third quarter and making it a 10-5 game.

Matthews scored his third goal of the game 12 seconds into the fourth quarter. Carraro would not be outdone, scoring his third a minute later to give DU a 12-5 advantage. Cassady scored his second for the Falcons with a man-advantage, but Baxter answered with his second of the contest to give Denver a 13-6 lead.
