No. 7 Mercy Takes Down Wheeling Jesuit

Behind four goals apiece from freshmen Jesse Wood and Quadear Mike, #7 Mercy defeated East Coast Conference affiliate member Wheeling (W.Va.) Jesuit today, 9-3. The game was played in Purchase, N.Y., in 39 degree temperature.

Mercy dominated the game, taking more than twice as many shots (40-19) as WJU. Mercy also had more ground balls (29-17), won more face offs (14-2), had a better clearing percentage, and had less turnovers.

After a scoreless first quarter, the second quarter was packed with action. WJU (4-3; 1-1 ECC) scored the game's first goal when Brian Frank scored on an assist from Landon DelPrince. Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic) then scored back-to-back goals to put Mercy up 2-1.

The Cardinals got a goal from Tyler Johnson to knot the score at 2-2 with 8:43 remaining in the half. Mercy (7-1; 3-1 ECC) then scored four unanswered goals to end the half and take a 6-2 lead at the break. Wood had the first goal, giving him three straight, followed by two from Mike (Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) and one from freshman Pat Hodapp (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson).

Wood opened the scoring in the fourth, followed by Mike's third of the game, and Mercy led by as many as six, at 8-2. Frank scored his second for the Cardinals before Mike netted his fourth for the final goal of the contest.

Wood and Mike had four goals and an assist each, while Hodapp had the other goal for Mercy. For Mike, the four goals are a career high. Sophomores Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) had a pair of assists, and Alex Martello (Montville, N.J./Montville) had one.

In goal, Sophomore T. J. DiCarlo (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had ten saves, five of which came in the fourth quarter.
