UC Davis Keeps Long Island U. Winless

Brooklyn, N.Y. Long Island University was downed by UC Davis, 22-11, on Sunday afternoon at LIU Field in non-conference action. Senior Jenna Schauder (Jackson, N.J.) and freshman Shakoya Smith (Baldwin, N.Y.) each scored a hat trick, but it wasn't enough to lift the Blackbirds past the Aggies, who scored five straight in the second half to push their lead to double-figures.

Hannah Mirza opened the scoring for UC Davis just 32 seconds into the contest and Laura Martin scored to push the lead to 2-0 at the 25:30 mark. Schauder got LIU on the board with a free position shot at the 22:07 before Mirza scored twice more and Gina Hoffmire tacked on another to make it 5-1midway through the half.

Freshman Katie Williams (Charlottesville, Va.) scored on an unassisted effort at the 10:41 mark before UC Davis came back with three straight goals. Schauder ended the run with an unassisted effort as the teams alternated goals over the final 7:04. Senior Sara LaNoir (Queensbury, N.Y.) tallied for LIU in the midst of a pair of Aggies goals before Schauder completed her hat trick with 1:07 to play in the half. Mirza scored just before the end of the half to make it 11-5 at the break.

The Aggies opened the second with a 4-1 run, with freshman Gina Eberwein (Coatesville, Pa.) tallying her first career goal before UC Davis ran off three in a row to make it 15-6. A goal by Williams was set up by freshman Kimberly Kovar (Bethpage, N.Y.) to end the spurt.

Following another UC Davis goal, Smith scored an unassisted effort before the Aggies responded with five straight to make it 21-8 with 9:45 to play. LaNoir ended the LIU scoring drought and after another Aggies goal, Smith scored twice in the final 3:51 for the final margin.

Williams picked up a team-high four draw controls, while junior Jacqueline Simonian (Farmingdale, N.Y.) made six saves and collected five ground balls. Freshman Gina Haber made three saves and had three ground balls.

Mirza and Hoffmire each scored six goals for UC Davis, while Hoffmire added a pair of assists. Jordan Majka made five saves and collected five ground balls for the Aggies who held a 38-21 edge in shots.

The Blackbirds travel to Mount St. Mary's on Friday, April 1, for a Northeast Conference contest.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Senior Gina Hoffmire and sophomore Hannah Mirza each scored six goals to boost UC Davis to a 22-11 win over Long Island in non-conference action at LIU Field Sunday afternoon. The Aggies improve to 9-2 for the season. The Blackbirds remain winless at 0-8.

The 22 goals marks a season high for UC Davis, which led all NCAA Division I teams in scoring offense entering the week. Furthermore, the total is the highest against a D-I opponent in school history. The 2004 team piled up 23 goals against Gannon and 24 against Colorado College.

Mirza added five draw controls and two steals to her offensive number. Hoffmire claimed two assists for eight total points while securing four ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers in the field.

Anna Geissbuhler tallied three goals and three assists, Laura Martin had a 2-1-3 scoring chart and freshman Meghan Jordan came off the bench to provide two goals and three assists. Sophomore Elizabeth Datino assisted on a game-high four goals despite not scoring one of her own.

UC Davis never trailed in the contest, with Geissbuhler assisting Mirza within 32 seconds of the opening draw for the game's first goal. Mirza completed her hat trick by the 18:04 mark as part of a 5-1 start. Hoffmire's assist to junior Kristi Irgens extended the lead to 8-2. A Mirza goal at the halftime whistle set the Aggies to an 11-5 margin at the break.
