Maritime Stormed by Keuka in Loss

THROGGS NECK, N.Y. (March 27, 2011) Maritime lost to non-conference adversary Keuka College, 10-4, Saturday afternoon at Reinhart Field. The Privateers fall to 1-6 overall record on the season, while the Storm improves to 2-0.

The Privateers grabbed the early lead as junior Kristen Saporito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) sent the ball into the net at 24:16 of the first half. Less than two minutes later, Maritime extended the lead when junior Catherine Brady (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) scored unassisted at 22:24. Senior Jill Davenport (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) also got on the score sheet, when she netted a free-position goal at 17:24 of the first half. Another goal by Saporito rounded up the score for the Privateers when she scored the final goal of the game with 2:46 remaining.

The Privateers were led by a stellar showing from sophomore Courtney Marietta (Grantville, Pa./Lower Dauphin) in goal as she recorded 20 saves, while picking up three groundballs and causing one turnover. Saporito had a team-high five groundballs to go with her two goals.

Senior Brandy Shafer led the way for the Storm with game-high goals (4), groundballs (6) and caused turnovers (3). Goalie Molly Hogan had five saves and one groundball in the winning effort. Keuka was able to equalize the game after the early 2-0 deficit, before Maritime scored its third goal. The Storm broke away with eight-straight tallies before allowing one final score.

The Privateers return to the field on Wednesday, April 30, as they play host to Skyline Conference rival Ramapo College of New Jersey at Reinhart Field. Opening draw is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
