No. 3 Blue Devils Beat Brown to Win 7th Straight

DURHAM, N.C. - Five different Blue Devils registered a multiple-point game to lead third-ranked Duke to a 12-7 non-conference victory over Brown this afternoon at Koskinen Stadium. Eleven players notched at least one point in the game for the Blue Devils, and Duke had eight different goal scorers.

Duke (8-2) pushes its win streak to seven games and its home win streak to 14. The 14-game run at home currently is the longest active streak in Division I lacrosse.

Senior Zach Howell and freshman Jordan Wolf both contributed three points from two goals and an assist, while junior Robert Rotanz and Christian Walsh also chipped in two-goal efforts. Sophomore defenseman Bill Conners registered his first career goal as well.

Brown, which falls to 3-4 on the season, was led by David Hawley's three goals. Andrew Feinberg put away two scores, while Parker Brown added two assists.

The Bears were the first on the scoreboard when Teddy Daiber connected on a shot at the 10:27 mark of the first quarter. Four minutes later, Conners and sophomore Greg DeLuca connected on a picture-perfect play off of a Brown turnover to make it a 1-1 score midway through the quarter. The goal sparked a 3-0 run for the Blue Devils that put them in front 3-1 just 12 seconds into the second quarter.

Duke's three-goal run was halted by Brown's Hawley two minutes later as he threw in consecutive goals to make it a 3-3 contest with 10:42 left in the second frame. The Blue Devils once again responded with another three unanswered to make it a 6-3 score at the break. Sophomore David Lawson, Wolf, and Rotanz all notched goals in that stretch to give Duke the lead for good.

Hawley posted his third goal of the game to start the second half to make it a two-goal game, but Duke again responded with a couple of unanswered goals to push its lead back up to four at 8-4. Five different Blue Devils scored in the second half for Duke to pull away from the Bears en route to the five-goal victory.

Duke held a 42-23 advantage in shots and won the ground ball battle 43-25. The Blue Devils were outstanding in the faceoff game, winning 14 of 21. Freshman Brendan Fowler won 8 of 13 restarts, while Charlie Payton won 6 of 8 battles at the X. Senior Tom Montelli led the defensive charge with four caused turnovers. Both CJ Costabile and Payton picked up five ground balls apiece.

In goal, Duke sophomore Dan Wigrizer had eight saves, while Matt Chriss had 12 stops. The seven goals allowed by Duke are the second fewest all season.

Duke extended its record to 8-2 overall with its seventh straight victory.

Brown jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Teddy Daiber (Rye, NY) just four-and a half minutes into the game. Goals by Duke's Bill Conmnors and Christian Walsh gave the Blue Devils a 2-1 lead after one quarter.

Duke extended its lead to 3-1 early in the second quarter, but the Bears answered with consecutive goals by senior David Hawley (New Canaan, CT) to tie the game, 3-3, with 10:42 left in the half.

The Blue Devils took control of the game with three straight tallies in the next five minutes, on goals by David Lawson, Jordan Wolf and Robert Rotanz, to pull ahead by a 6-3 margin at intermission.
