Wheelock Falls to Visiting Daniel Webster

CHESTNUT HILL, MA - Daniel Webster scored the first seven goals en route to a 17-3 victory over Wheelock in a non-conference contest on Wednesday at Pine Manor College's Hedley Field. The first-year Wildcats fell to 0-5, while the Eagles are now 2-1.

Junior Kevin Kareckas (South Berwick, ME/Marshwood) and freshman Zach Bushway (Bethlehem, NH/Profile) both scored for Wheelock, sophomore Michael Manning (Brookfield, NH/Kingswood Regional) had 16 saves, and classmate Matt Burns (Cheyenne, WY/Cheyenne East) recorded a season-high 10 face-off victories.

Daniel Webster sophomore Kieran Kavanaugh (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) led all players with six goals and five assists for 11 points, and junior Justin Chiulli (Saugus, MA/Saugus) turned in six markers of his own. Freshman Nate Burr (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug) had six stops during his collegiate goalkeeping debut. The Eagles utilized a 4 for 9 advantage on man-up opportunities.

The visitors scored four times in each of the first three quarters before adding five in the fourth. Kavanaugh put the Eagles up for good 3:24 after the opening draw, assisted his team's final three opening-period tallies and then scored on a man-up opportunity at 7:25 of the second to make it 5-0. Bushway skipped a shot past Burr to put Wheelock on the board with 2:54 remaining in the half, making it 7-1, and Kareckas' bad-angle man-up goal off a dish from junior Ben Lewis (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) at 57 seconds provided an 8-2 margin at intermission.

Daniel Webster scored the opening nine goals of the second half, with Chiulli at one point accounting for four during a five-goal stretch that spanned 7:19. The Wildcats' final marker, with 17 ticks left, came after an Eagle defender knocked a loose ball into his own net.

Wheelock plays twice over the weekend, beginning with a Saturday contest against Colleges of the Fenway (COF) counterpart Wentworth Institute of Technology. The squads square off at Pine Manor at 12:00 p.m.
