Lycoming Withstands Rally by King's for Victory

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. Junior Ethan Payne (Farmington, N.Y./Victor) posted three goals and an assist and sophomore Stephen Romano (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) added two goals and two assists as Lycoming opened up a five-goal lead before withstanding a late King's (Pa.) rally to claim an 8-7 MAC victory at McCarthy Stadium on Thursday, March 30.

The Monarchs (3-5 overall, 1-2 MAC) took a 3-2 lead late in the first quarter when senior Kevin Pfister (Toms River, N.J./Toms River South) tied the game with 52 seconds left in the quarter, beginning a decisive run of six straight goals over the next 25 minutes to take control of the game.

Payne and freshman Brett Farrell (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) each posted two goals during the run, which wrapped up when Payne capped off his hat trick with 6:17 left to take an 8-3 lead.

The Monarchs fought back though, with four goals in a span of three minutes late in the game, with Lenny Fox scoring twice in a span of 18 seconds to make it 8-7 with 27 seconds left. However, senior J.B. Campanella (Lansdale, Pa./LaSalle) won the ensuing faceoff to stave off the rally.

The Warriors (2-5 overall, 1-1 MAC) were led defensively by senior Alan Antinarelli (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas), who stopped 13 shots in the win. Junior Tim Clemente (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) added four groundballs and senior Jarrett Hesse (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) added three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Senior Brendan Nally (Somerville, N.J./Immaculata) added two caused turnovers.

Fox led the Monarchs with three goals and Mike O'Brien added a goal and an assist. Billy McCullough posted five groundballs. In net, Kevin Conzola stopped 11 shots.

The Warriors will look for their second straight win on Saturday when they host Alvernia in a MAC matchup at 1:00 p.m.
