Oswego State Rally Falls Short vs. Utica

OSWEGO, N.Y. - Oswego State mounted a late comeback against visiting Utica, but came up just short in the end to suffer its first loss of the season by the score of 7-6 Wednesday afternoon at South Athletic Field.

The Lakers tallied three goals in the final five minutes of regulation, and pulled to within one following Erin Cummings' goal with 28 seconds remaining. Oswego State dropped to 2-1 overall, while the Pioneers improved to 2-2.

Head coach Brandi Ostrander's squad held a slim 2-1 advantage in the first 12 minutes of the game after goals by Rachael Raffa and Cummings. However, Tammy Kohanski's goal at 12:11 in the first half was the first of four straight Utica goals to give the Pioneers a 5-2 lead four minutes into the second half. Laker goalie Ashlee Engel came up big in the net during the first half, as she posted nine saves.

Senior Bri Borrow stopped the streak when she scored on a pass from Liz Conrad with 6:08 gone in the second half. Utica answered back with goals from Maria Santucci and Julianne Schulteiss to give the Pioneers their largest lead of the game at 7-3.

However, Borrow led the charge to get Oswego State back into the contest as she scored her second goal of the contest with the assist going to Kelly Schroeder with 4:43 left.

Nearly two minutes later, Raffa posted her second goal of the game after receiving a pass from Courtney Cosentino at the 27:07 mark. Cummings pulled the Lakers to within one goal with 28 seconds on the clock. Oswego State won the ensuing draw control, but was unable to get a shot off in an attempt to send the game into overtime.

Both squads struggled on free position attempts as Utica went 0 for 5 and the Lakers went 0 for 11.

Utica's Lily Fleskes paced the Pioneers with three goals, while Kohanski added three assists to go along with her goal. Engel finished the game with 15 saves in the loss. Shelby Barbay turned away 10 shots in the win.

The Lakers open conference play on Saturday when they travel to Cortland to take on the Red Dragons at 1:00 p.m.
