St. Mary's Falls Short Against York

St. Mary's City, Md. Despite holding York to a season-low seven goals, the St. Mary's men's lacrosse team suffered a 7-4 setback to the conference-leading Spartans Wednesday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action.

York (8-2, 4-0 CAC) rolled to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter behind two consecutive goals by sophomore attackman James Lowe (Monrovia, Md./Urbana). Sophomore attackman Patrick Mull (Fallston, Md./Fallston) finally put the Seahawks on the scoreboard with his first goal of the season with 23 seconds remaining.

Senior midfielder Adam Cooper (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) returned a three-goal cushion to the Spartans with an unassisted goal 48 seconds into the start of the second period. Senior midfielder Bobby Cooke (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) finished off a pass from senior attackman Dennis Rosson (Severna Park, Md./Severn) to close the gap to 4-2 at halftime.

Rosson notched an unassisted goal at the 5:00 mark of the third stanza to pull the Seahawks to 4-3 but then first-year midfielder Andrew Taylor (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) found the back of the net at 3:46 as the Spartans headed into the final quarter with a 5-3 lead.

Lowe was involved in the first goals of the fourth period as he scored at 13:24 and then assisted on junior attackman Jimmy Langton's (Mount Sinai, N.Y./Mount Sinai) tally at 7:55 for York's biggest lead of the game. The final score was 7-4 following Rosson's unassisted goal with two-hundredths of a second left as he bounced one past junior keeper Tyler Powell (Pasadena, Md./Spalding), the reigning CAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Rosson paced the Seahawk offense with two goals and an assist.

In goal, junior Stu Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) made seven saves, scooped up a ground ball and forced a turnover in the first half while senior Pat Simpson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) recorded three stops in the final 30 minutes.

The Seahawk defense was solid on extra-man opportunities as St. Mary's denied all three of the Spartans' chances.

St. Mary's will return to action this Saturday, April 2 as the Seahawks welcome No. 2 Salisbury University to Seahawk Stadium for a league tilt at 1:00 pm.
