Red Foxes Drop Match to the Pioneers

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. Marist dropped a contest to the Denver Pioneers 14-6 on Thursday night at Tenney Stadium at Leonidoff Field. The Red Foxes were led by junior Kelly Condon (Roslyn, Pa.) who scored three first half goals. The loss dropped Marist to 3-6 on the season.

Freshman Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.), junior Shannon Haas (Farmingdale, N.Y.), and junior Jori Procaccini (Long Valley, N.J.) each added one goal apiece for the Red Foxes.

The Red Foxes jumped out to a 2-0 lead to begin the first half. After five minutes of scoreless action, Condon took the ball from behind the net, spun around a defender and scored at the 24:43 mark to put the Red Foxes on the board. A little over a minute later at 23:11 she scored again off a free position attempt.

After Denver tied the score, Condon put the Red Foxes back on top 3-2. She took the ball from the right side of the fan in front of the net and scored. The Pioneers closed the first half on a 5-0 run to head to the locker room leading 7-3.

The Red Foxes were a perfect 7 for 7 on clears in the first half and controlled seven of the 11 draws.

After two Denver goals to begin the second half, Haas scored her seventh goal of the year on a free position shot at 25:59. It was her third free position goal in seven attempts this season. After a Pioneer goal by Jenn Etzel, Procaccini responded with her team leading 18th goal on the season on a free position attempt to pull the Red Foxes to within five at 10-5.

Two Denver goals within 24 seconds a 17:45 and 17:21 put them up 12-5. Romano then extended her point streak to eight games with her 12th goal on the season at the 14:37 mark of the second half. Two goals by Denver capped the scoring for the night at 14-6.

Denver (3-8) was led by Kara Secora who recorded six points in the game with two goals and four assists. Lauren Ciccomascolo had three goals and Jenn Etzel added four points for the Pioneers.

For the game, the Red Foxes forced 21 Denver turnovers including 14 in the second half alone. Marist converted on three of the six free position shots they took. Freshman Bailey Knapton (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and Romano each had three ground balls to lead the Red Foxes. Romano also led the team with five draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Marist will next play at Fairfield on Sunday, April 3 at 1:00 p.m. The game will open the MAAC season for the Red Foxes.

BALTIMORE, Md. - University of Denver women's lacrosse redshirt sophomore Kara Secora (Denver, Colo.) had two goals and three assists, and junior Lauren Ciccomascolo (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) added a hat trick and an assist, leading the Pioneers beat Marist 14-6 on Thursday.

The Red Foxes (3-6) took an early lead as Kelly Condon scored twice in the first seven minutes, but Denver (3-8) went on a 9-1 run stretching into the second half to cruise to the victory.

Secora added five ground balls and a caused turnover, and freshman Jenn Etzel (Bel Air, Md.) had two goals, two assists and four ground balls. Condor had a hat trick for Marist.

Senior Lauren Benner (Arnold, Md.) made four saves in the cage to earn the win, and junior Ashley Harman (Boyertown, Pa.) had six saves with just two goals against. Denver outshot Marist 34-24 and won the ground ball battle 29-20.

The Pioneers remain on the road with a meeting at Quinnipiac on Sunday at 9 a.m. MT.
