Hartwick Improves to 5-1 with Victory at Alfred

ALFRED, NY Hartwick's women's lacrosse team (5-1) led by as many as eight goals in a 13-8 road win at Alfred University on Friday evening in the Empire 8 opener for both teams.

Seven different Hawks registered goals in the game, led by freshman Brittany McCabe's (Manorville, NY/East-South Manor) five tallies. The victory is the first in the Empire 8 Conference for the Hawks since 2008. Hartwick is now 5-1 for just the fourth time since the inception of the program in 1967.

Hartwick never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 6-0 lead after 25 minutes. McCabe scored three times in the opening half, which included the Hawks' first two goals on free-position shots 1:06 apart.

Sophomore Ryan McGovern (Miller Place, NY/Rocky Point) added 'Wick's third tally with 16:21 to go in the half and freshman Ali Sisco (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) scored off a feed from Emily Walsh (Cortland, NY/Cortland) to extend the edge to four just over four minutes later.

Freshman Megan Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) gave the visitors a five-goal edge with six minutes left and McCabe picked up the hat-trick 1:50 later.

Alfred finally was able to solve Hartwick keeper Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland), who finished the half with six saves, after 26 minutes. Elyse Caldwell tallied first and Devin Fitzgerald scored on a free-position shot 32 seconds later to cut the deficit to four, 6-2. Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) and Ali Garcia traded goals for each team in the final three minutes and the Hawks led 7-3 at the break.

Twenty-nine second into the second half, Michelle Adams pulled the Saxons to within three. McCabe and Erin Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran), however, answered for 'Wick 35 seconds apart. AU got one back 30 second after Doyle's goal making the score 9-5.

Four unanswered tallies for Hartwick would put the game away. McCabe scored her fifth and final goal with under 20 minutes left. LaVaute registered her 60th career goal at the midway point of the half, and Walsh scored the 50th goal of her career with under 10 minutes left. McGovern closed out the 'Wick scoring with Luce assisting with 8:16 remaining to put the Hawks up 13-5.

Garcia scored two of Alfred's three goals in the final 7:18 to make the score a closer.

Kaye ended the game with 11 saves. It marks her second-highest total of the season and gives her 350 stops for her career.

The Hawks outshot the Saxons 32-25 in the game. 'Wick also earned 28 of the game's 46 ground balls. LaVaute and Sisco led the Hawks with a game-high six ground balls each. Doyle grabbed three.

Garcia ended the game with three goals to lead AU, and Caldwell and Adams each recorded a goal and two assists. Ashley White notched a game-high six draws and Caldwell picked up four ground balls. Saxon goalie Kate Baughman made nine saves.

Hartwick plays tomorrow at Utica at 1:00 p.m.
