Nazareth Dispatches Elmira in Empire 8 Match

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Junior Nate DeLone (Rush-Henrietta) scored a career-best five goals Saturday for host Nazareth as the Golden Flyers defeated Elmira, 13-7, in an Empire 8 Conference men's lacrosse game.

Nazareth improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in conference games. Elmira is 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the E8.

Nazareth never trailed in the game, but the Soaring Eagles kept it close much of the way. Nazareth was up 2-1, 5-2 and 10-5 at the quarter breaks. Nazareth unleashed 58 shots in the game, but Elmira goalie Dave Bucchino played well in making 23 saves.

DeLone and senior midfielder Scott Castle (Skaneateles) scored for Nazareth in the first quarter as the Golden Flyers built an early lead. Freshman Collin Clark (Austin, TX) converted a man-up opportunity early in the second quarter off a pass from Joe Jacobs-Ferderbar (Orchard Park, NY) as Nazareth went up 3-1. After Elmira scored again, Nazareth closed out the half with unassisted goals from freshman Trevar Haefele (Greene, ME) and DeLone to go up 5-2 at halftime.

Nazareth extended its lead by scoring five times in the third quarter. DeLone and Jacobs-Ferderbar each scored twice and junior C.J. Estes (Medfield, MA) had an unassisted score. Long-stick Mitchel Frey (Terrace Park, OH) had an assist on DeLone's first goal of the quarter with a cross-field pass.

In the fourth quarter, DeLone, Haefele and Estes each scored as Nazareth opened a 13-6 advantage before Elmira's David Evert closed out the scoring with his third goal of the game.

DeLone had seven ground balls in addition to his five goals. Jacobs-Ferderbar had six ground balls. Junior Tim Doyle (Palmyra-Macedon) played all 60 minutes in goal for Nazareth and had nine saves.

Nazareth is home again Wednesday for an Empire 8 Conference game against Utica at 4:00 p.m.
