Hartwick Rally Falls Short at Utica

UTICA, NY Hartwick outscored Utica 4-2 over the final 37 minutes but could not overcome a 6-1 first-half deficit in an 8-5 loss on Saturday at Charles Gaetano Stadium. The loss for the Hawks is just their second of the season and drops them to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the Empire 8. UC improves to 4-2 and 1-1.

Junior Hannah Kennedy (Avon, CT/Avon) led the Hawks with two goals. Sophomore Erin Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) dished out two assists and senior goalie Jen Kaye (Altamont, NY/Guilderland) stopped nine Pioneers shots.

Junior Brittany LaVaute (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles) gave Hartwick its only lead of the day 3:10 into the game on a free position shot. The Pioneers would then rattle off six straight goals over a 15-minute span to take a five-goal lead. Five different players registered goals for UC in the span, led by Katlyn Banker's two tallies.

Following a timeout, the Hawk defense regrouped and subsequently blanked the Pioneers over the next 30 minutes of the game. Erica Scicchitano (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) and Kennedy scored in the final seven minutes of the first half with Doyle assisting both tallies to make the score 6-3 at the break.

'Wick continued to cut into the lead in the second half as Kennedy scored on a free-position effort after nine minutes. Near the midway point of the half, freshman Ali Sisco (Kendall Park, NJ/South Brunswick) made it a one-goal game, 6-5, with her seventh goal of the season.

The Hawks never got a chance to tie the game as UC won the ensuing draw and maintained possession for six and a half minutes. The Pioneers fired three shots at the Hartwick cage in the span, but Kaye denied them each time. Lily Fleskes finally gave UC some breathing room with a free-position goal with 10:21 remaining. Tammy Kohanski closed out the scoring with under eight minutes left.

Utica outshot Hartwick 22-18 in the game. The Pioneers also won 10 of 15 draw controls. The Hawks held the edge in ground balls, 18-13.

Freshman Morgan Galipeau (Bennington, VT/Mount Anthony) led Hartwick with four ground balls. Sisco and sophomore Lindsay Zweigenhaft (Islip, NY/Islip) each registered three. LaVaute and Galipeau each caused three turnovers.

Utica was led by Kohanski's two goals and two assists. Fleskes and Banker each scored twice and Julianne Schulteiss adde a goal and two helpers. Goalie Shelby Barbay made five stops in 52 minutes. Stephanie Belanger saved two shots in eight minutes of action.

Hartwick returns home to host Elmira College on Saturday, April 9th. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
