Plattsburgh Starts Fast to Defeat Oswego State

OSWEGO, N.Y. - Plattsburgh quickly jumped out to an 8-2 first-half lead, and never looked back as it handed Oswego State a 17-8 conference opening loss. Chris Porten paced the Laker offensive attack with three goals followed by a pair of goals by Mark Briggs and Britt Leone.

The win moved the Cardinals to 7-1, 1-0 in the SUNYAC. Oswego State, which dropped to 4-4 and 0-1 in conference, return to action on Wednesday at home against Cobleskill at 4:00 p.m.

Oswego State struck first in the opening period when Mark Briggs added his eighth goal of the season. Plattsburgh came storming back with four consecutive tallies, finished off by Kyle Norchi's incredible 29th goal of the season with 13:22 left in the second quarter. The Lakers stopped the drought with a quick answer by Casey Balzer to cut the deficit to 4-2. The Cardinals again rallied off four straight goals to take an 8-2 lead into halftime.

Plattsburgh picked up right where it left off at the start of the third period adding another four-goal run to extend the lead to 12-2. It was not until 1:14 left in the quarter before Britt Leone added his first goal of the game to cut the deficit to single digits.

Plattsburgh's stingy defense and 17 Oswego State turnovers did not help the Lakers' efforts to keep pace with the Cardinals red-hot offense. Oswego State did not take advantage of each extra man-up opportunity, as it went 1 for 6. Plattsburgh won the key battle in groundballs scooping up 44, compared to the Lakers' 33. The Cardinals were led by Brett McClelland and Kyle Norchi each adding 3 goals apiece, while Tim Lawrence added 2 goals and 2 assists.

Laker goalie Ian O'Brien stopped 14 shots, while Plattsburgh's Danny Caufield picked up the win, with 15 saves
