RPI Loses Tough Liberty Battle to Union

TROY, N.Y. In a hard fought battle that saw nine lead changes, the Dutchwomen of Union College slipped past Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), 10-8 in Liberty League action on Saturday. With the loss, the Engineers fall to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the Dutchwomen improve to 4-3 overall (2-0 Liberty League).

Senior Melissa Hine (South Hadley, MA/South Hadley) broke out the scoring just 58 seconds into the first half, putting Union on the board with an unassisted goal.

RPI responded with goals from seniors Afton Marshall (Windham, NH/Salem) and Stephanie Caouette (Wynantskill, NY/Columbia), giving the Engineers a one-goal lead.

Hine evened the score at 2-2 with another unassisted tally at 22:00, but Caouette put RPI on top once again just 2:08 later, collecting a quick pass from rookie Meg Colitz (East Greenwich, RI/LaSalle Academy) and firing it past Union goaltender Alexis Deeb (Albany, NY/Albany Academies).

The lead would flip-flop four more times before the end of the half, with neither team managing more than a one-goal advantage. With under six minutes remaining, the Dutchwomen scored twice on goals by sophomore Brittany Fraser (Boxford, MA/Masconomet Regional) and senior Casey Dianni (Rye, NY/Rye) to head into halftime with a 6-5 lead.

Rensselaer took an 8-7 lead in the second half on a goal from senior Jen Greenwood (Sandy Hook, CT/Newton), but Union seniors Kristin Joyce, Chelsea Charette, and Hine all stepped up, scoring three straight unanswered tallies to seal the victory.

Hine led all scoring with four goals, also scooping up three ground balls on the afternoon. Marshall had three goals and an assist for RPI, while sophomore Shannon Maguire (Randolph, NJ/Randolph) picked up two goals.

Sophomore Allie Arnal (Lakewood, NY/Phillips Exeter Academy) stopped six shots in goal for the Engineers, while Deeb made three saves for the Dutchwomen.

RPI is away next weekend, facing Hamilton in a Liberty League matchup on Saturday (3:00 pm). Union will play Skidmore at home in a league game on Tuesday night (7:00 pm).
