Bucknell Rallies, But Slow Start Dooms Bison vs. Leopards

LEWISBURG, Pa. Bucknell ran out of time on a spirited comeback attempt, but it could not overcome a slow start and fell 13-11 to Lafayette in a Patriot League contest Saturday at Graham Field.

Julia Braun (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland) scored four goals, while Ali Carey (Clarksville, Md./Garrison Forest) and Madison Hurwitz (Holland, Pa./Council Rock) tallied three each for the Bison, who fell to 2-10 overall and 0-4 in the league.

Ana White led Lafayette (2-9, 1-2) with four goals and five draw controls, while Addie Godfrey and Laura Kleiber added three goals apiece. The Leopards completely dominated the first 15 minutes of the game, sprinting out to an 8-0 lead. They would need nearly all of that cushion, however, as Bucknell crept back in the game.

Lafayette goalie Alexa Biale played a big role for Lafayette early, making 11 of her 13 saves in the first half. She had five stops before the Bison finally got on the board on Hurwitz's goal off a Braun feed with 14:57 left. Bucknell finished the half on a 4-1 run, with three of the goals coming from Hurwitz, to pull within 9-4 at intermission.

The Leopards took the momentum back at the start of the second half, when White earned the draw control and ran right to the goal for a score just 12 seconds into the period. They built their lead back up to seven at 12-5 after back-to-back goals from White and Ana Drehwing, but the Bison had the better of play for the game's last 18 minutes.

Adrienne Wendling (Bethesda, Md./Bullis School) scored off an assist from Andrea Feldman (Radnor, Pa./Radnor) to start Bucknell's comeback attempt. Carey followed 3:30 later, and then about 90 seconds after that Braun weaved through the defense for a score that made it 12-8.

Lafayette backup goalie Meghan Curtin stopped Braun on a breakaway moments later to temporarily halt Bucknell's momentum. But the Bison got another stop and pulled within 12-9 with 6:43 left when Lindsay Ferro (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) set up Braun in front for her third goal of the day.

Bucknell had trouble stringing goals together late in the game because Lafayette was winning most of the draws, and the Leopards netted a big insurance goal with 5:34 left when Godfrey scored from an Erin Steel feed from behind the cage.

Bucknell's prettiest goal came with just over four minutes to play, when goalie Alyssa DeLorenz threw a 50-yard clearing pass, hitting Carey in stride for a fastbreak goal. DeLorenz picked up a rare assist on the play, and it proved big when Braun scored again with 2:26 to play to make it 13-11. But Lafayette won the draw and killed off most of the remaining time.

DeLorenz finished with nine saves for the Bison, who outshot Lafayette 31-29. The Leopards won the ground ball battle 17-16 and the draw controls 15-8. Katelyn Miller (Resiterstown, Md./McDonogh) dished out three assists for the Bison, giving her a team-high 10 on the season.

Bucknell returns home next Saturday to face Holy Cross at 1:00 p.m. at Graham Field.
