#15 Bowdoin Cruises to Non-Conference Win over UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Eleven players found their way into the scoring column as nationally-ranked Bowdoin improved to 7-1 on the year with a 20-3 non-conference victory over the University of New England in action Sunday afternoon at the Big Blue Turf.

The Polar Bears, ranked No. 15 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) poll, received three goals apiece from juniors Katie Herter (Topsfield, Mass.) and Katie Stewart (Chevy Chase, Md.), as well as first-year Jordan Smith (Glen Ridge, N.J.), to pace the attack.

Sophomores Devin Hardy (Milbrook, N.Y.) and Helen Conaghan (Bethesda, Md.), and first-year Betsy Sachs (Glenside, Pa.) all contributed two goals to the cause for Bowdoin, which out-shot the hosts, 42-10. The Polar Bears also tallied assists on more than half (11) of their scores -- spread out across nine individuals.

UNE (3-7) got on the board first, as junior Jenna Barton (Wolfeboro, N.H.) notched her ninth goal of the season 1:26 into the contest. Bowdoin responded with four straight, led by sophomore Carolyn Gorajek (Hightstown, N.J.), who had a goal and two assists during the stretch.

Barton set-up first-year Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) at the 16:39 mark to make it 4-2, before the visitors closed out the half with seven unanswered to lead 11-2 at the break.

Bowdoin scored nine times in the second period, while the lone UNE marker in the half came from junior Jessy Dvorak (Windsor, Conn.).

Sophomores Tara Connolly (Simsbury, Conn.) and Alexandra Brown (Lexington, Mass.) split time in goal for the Polar Bears, posting one save and four saves, respectively. For Big Blue, first-year Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine) made a season-best 13 stops.

Each team is back in action with league matches on Wednesday. Bowdoin hosts eighth-ranked NESCAC foe Colby College (7:00 p.m.), while the Nor'easters are set to square-off against TCCC-unbeaten Endicott College (7:00 p.m.).
