Assumption Downs SNHU for First Time Since 2000

Manchester, N.H. (April 5) -- Led by a hat trick from Nick Violandi (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury), Assumption defeated Southern New Hampshire by a 7-4 final at Larkin Field on Tuesday night. The victory is the first for the Greyhounds over Southern New Hampshire since the 2000 season.

Assumption jumped on the board first in the final minutes of the opening quarter as senior Will Langevin (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle) tallied his 20 goal of the season. Langevin took a pass from up top from Tim Roy (Avon, Conn./Avon) and after a couple of moves, beat the Penmen goalie for the score. The Penmen answered with 11 seconds left in the first quarter however as Greg Reynolds scored to make it a 1-1 game after one period.

The Greyhounds regained the lead with 6:19 left in the second quarter as Connor MacNeil (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) found Violandi cutting to the net for the 2-1 advantage. Violandi scored again just 53 seconds later for a 3-1 edge and the Greyhounds added a goal by MacNeil from Langevin to take control at 4-1 with just over four minutes remaining in the period. The Greyhounds outshot the Penmen by a 28-7 margin in the opening half.

Roy extended the Greyhound lead to 5-1 on an unassisted goal just 2:44 into the third quarter before the Penmen answered back with a pair of man-down goals just 27 seconds apart to close to within 5-3. The first goal was created off a Greyhound turnover as Keith Merluzzo scored off a pass from a speedy Thomas Todd, who took the ball nearly the length of the field to set up Merluzzo. On the ensuing possession, Marc Novaco found the back of the net to get the Penmen back to within a pair.

Senior John Murphy (Walpole, Mass/Bridgton Academy) got the Greyhound offense back in gear with a man-down goal with 6:14 left in the third to extend the lead back to 6-3. Murphy picked up the rebound off a shot from MacNeil and beat the SNHU goalie in the lower right corner for the lone goal of the third period.

Violandi capped off the hat trick 2:02 into the fourth quarter as he took a pass from Langevin and put the Greyhounds out in front by a 7-3 margin. After 10 minutes of scoreless play, the Penmen pulled to within 7-4 on an unassisted goal by James Sabino.

Senior netminder Scott Vogel (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy-Liberty) turned aside 12 shots in the victory, while Brendan O'Brien made 17 saves in the defeat. The Greyhounds outshot the Penmen by a 40-22 margin in the game.

With the win, the Greyhounds snap their four-game losing streak and improve to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in Northeast-10 play, while the Penmen fall to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the league. Assumption is back in action on Saturday, April 9th as the Greyhounds host Franklin Pierce in a Noon start at Multi-Sport Stadium.
